Administering medication to animals presents unique challenges that differ significantly from human medicine. Factors such as variations in species size, physiology, temperament, and the environment in which the animal lives (e.g., a home versus a farm) dictate the specific form a drug must take. Veterinary pharmaceutical dosage forms are specially designed to ensure the safe, effective, and accurate delivery of therapeutic agents to a diverse range of patients.

Oral Solid Dosage Forms

Solid oral medications are among the most common forms used in veterinary practice, particularly for companion animals like dogs and cats. They offer ease of storage, stability, and precise dosing.

  • Tablets: These can be uncoated or coated (often to mask the taste of bitter drugs). Some are scored to allow for easy breaking into smaller doses. "Chewable" tablets are highly palatable and formulated to taste like meat or treats, improving compliance in pets.
  • Capsules: Capsules consist of gelatin shells containing powder or granules. They are often used when the drug has an unpleasant taste, as the shell hides the flavor. Veterinarians or owners may also open the capsules and sprinkle the contents onto food, though this must be done carefully to ensure the full dose is consumed.
  • Boluses: These are large, solid tablets designed specifically for large animals, such as cattle and horses. They are administered using a balling gun to ensure the medication is swallowed and reaches the stomach for systemic absorption.

Oral Liquid Dosage Forms

Liquid formulations are often preferred for animals that refuse tablets or for owners who struggle to administer pills. They are also essential for very small animals (like exotic pets or neonates) where precise dosage adjustments are required.

  • Solutions: These are clear liquids where the drug is fully dissolved in a solvent. Solutions ensure uniform distribution of the drug, meaning every drop contains the same amount of active ingredient.
  • Suspensions: In these forms, solid particles of the drug are suspended in a liquid. They must be shaken well before use to ensure the dose is accurate. Suspensions are often used for drugs that are not soluble in water.
  • Syrups and Elixirs: These contain sugar or sweeteners to improve palatability, masking the bitter taste of medications for picky eaters.

Parenteral (Injectable) Forms

Injectable dosage forms bypass the digestive system, leading to faster absorption and higher bioavailability. They are critical in emergency situations, for surgery, or when an animal is vomiting and cannot keep oral medication down.

  • Intravenous (IV) Solutions: Administered directly into the bloodstream, these must be sterile and free of particulate matter. They act almost instantly.
  • Intramuscular (IM) and Subcutaneous (SC) Injections: These are injectable suspensions or solutions deposited into muscle or under the skin. They are often oil-based to slow the absorption of the drug, providing a longer duration of action. This is useful for antibiotics that need to stay in the system for days.

Topical and Transdermal Forms

These forms are applied directly to the skin or mucous membranes and are ideal for localized issues or for animals that are difficult to medicate orally.

  • Ointments and Creams: Used for skin infections, wounds, or hot spots. Ointments are greasy and occlusive, while creams are water-based and easier to clean off.
  • Otic (Ear) and Ophthalmic (Eye) Preparations: These are specialized solutions or suspensions formulated to be non-irritating to sensitive tissues in the eyes and ears.
  • Spot-on and Transdermal Gels: These are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. "Spot-on" treatments are famously used for flea and tick control in dogs and cats. Transdermal gels are sometimes applied to the inner ear of cats to deliver drugs like methimazole for hyperthyroidism.

Specialized Forms for Livestock

In food-producing animals, dosage forms must account for the sheer number of animals being treated, as well as strict withdrawal times to ensure drug residues do not enter the food chain.

  • Premixes: These are drug formulations intended to be mixed into feed on a large scale. They ensure that every animal in a herd or flock receives a small but consistent dose of medication while eating.
  • Water Solubles: These powders or liquids are added to the animals' drinking water. This is effective when animals are off-feed (not eating) but are still drinking water.
  • Pour-ons: Similar to spot-ons but used on larger livestock like cattle, these liquids are poured along the backline of the animal to treat external parasites or deliver systemic medication.
  • Intramammary Infusions: These are antibiotic preparations inserted directly into the teat canal of dairy cows to treat mastitis.

The diversity of veterinary pharmaceutical dosage forms reflects the complexity of animal care. From a flavored chewable tablet for a household dog to a mass-administered water soluble for a flock of chickens, the choice of dosage form is fundamental to the success of the treatment regimen.
