About the Alliance
The United Nations Alliance for Sustainable Fashion (UNASF) is a multistakeholder platform that brings together governments, industry leaders, NGOs, academia, and consumers to accelerate the transition toward a circular, inclusive, and climateresilient fashion system. Launched in 2022 under the auspices of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the Alliance seeks to embed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into every stage of the apparel value chain.
Fashion is the secondlargest polluter after the oil industry, responsible for roughly 10% of global greenhousegas emissions, massive water use, and billions of kilograms of textile waste each year. The Alliance was created to turn this challenge into an opportunity for innovation, job creation, and climate mitigation.
Strategic Goals & Pillars
The Alliance operates around four interlinked pillars that together define its roadmap:
- Design for Longevity Promote circular design, durable materials, and repairoriented business models.
- Responsible Production Reduce water, chemicals, and carbon footprints through cleaner manufacturing and renewable energy.
- Equitable Supply Chains Ensure fair wages, safe workplaces, and gender equality throughout the value chain.
- Consumer Awareness & Behavior Empower shoppers with transparent information, encouraging sustainable consumption.
All pillars are measured against relevant SDGs, notably SDG12 (Responsible Consumption & Production), SDG13 (Climate Action), SDG5 (Gender Equality), and SDG8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
Key Actions and Initiatives
The Alliance coordinates a suite of programmes that address the most pressing environmental and social impacts of fashion.
1. Global Textile Standard (GTS)
A voluntary, sciencebased certification that verifies a products environmental and social performance from fiber to finished garment. Companies adopting GTS must meet benchmarks for water use, chemical management, carbon intensity, and worker rights.
2. Circular Innovation Hub
A network of labs and incubators in five continents that support startups developing textile recycling technologies, biodegradable fibers, and digital platforms for clothing resale.
3. ClimateSmart Manufacturing Initiative
Partnerships with major fabric mills to transition to renewable electricity, adopt heatrecovery systems, and implement lowimpact dyeing processes. The goal is to cut sectoral emissions by 30% by 2030.
4. FairTrade Textile Program
Collaboration with local cooperatives in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Vietnam to guarantee living wages, safe working conditions, and capacitybuilding for women artisans.
5. Consumer Transparency Dashboard
An opensource online tool that lets shoppers scan a QR code on a garment and instantly view its carbon footprint, water usage, and supplychain certifications.
Partners and Membership
The strength of the Alliance lies in its diverse coalition:
- Governments: United Nations bodies, European Commission, Ministry of Environment (Brazil), and others.
- Industry Leaders: H&M Group, Inditex, Levi Strauss & Co., Adidas, and emerging sustainable brands.
- NGOs & Civil Society: Fashion Revolution, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Clean Clothes Campaign.
- Academia & Research: MIT Textiles Lab, University of Copenhagen, Indian Institute of Technology.
Members contribute resources, share data, and cocreate policy recommendations that are presented at UN Climate Conferences and World Economic Forum meetings.
