Several variables determine the final output of the distillation process. The maturity of the peppermint plant is paramount; harvesting at the beginning of the flowering stage typically yields the highest concentration of menthol. Additionally, the steam pressure must be carefully regulated. If the pressure is too high, the steam may flow through the plant material too quickly, resulting in poor extraction. If the steam is too dry, it may not effectively penetrate the plant cell walls to release the oils.

Post-Extraction Processing

Once the essential oil is separated from the "hydrosol" (the aromatic water byproduct), it often undergoes a final purification step. This might include light filtration to remove plant debris or moisture, and sometimes a process called "rectification." Rectification is a secondary vacuum distillation process used to remove undesirable low-boiling compounds, resulting in a cleaner, more standardized essential oil suitable for commercial use.
