RRB Group D Syllabus Complete Guide

Overview

The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) conducts the Group D recruitment exam to fill various nontechnical posts such as Track Maintainer, Shop Assistant, Helper, HelperSteno, Junior Clerk, and many more. The exam is open to candidates who have passed 10th or 12th (depending on the post) and meet the age and physical standards specified in the notification.

Every year thousands of aspirants apply, making the exam highly competitive. Understanding the syllabus, exam pattern and scoring system is essential for building a focused study plan.

Exam Pattern

The RRB Group D exam is a computerbased test (CBT) consisting of two sections:

  • General Awareness (GA) 50 questions, 50 marks, 30 minutes.
  • Mathematics and Reasoning (MR) 50 questions, 50 marks, 30 minutes.

Both sections are of equal weight; each correct answer carries 1 mark. There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer.

Detailed Syllabus

General Awareness (GA)

  • Current Affairs: National & International events (last 6 months), awards, sports, and major economic developments.
  • General Science: Basics of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Environment.
  • History & Geography: Indian history (ancient, medieval, modern), Indian geography, and world geography.
  • Indian Polity & Constitution: Fundamental rights, duties, structure of government.
  • Railway Knowledge: History of Indian Railways, abbreviations, railway zones, important railway terms, safety rules, and recent developments.
  • General Mathematics: Number systems, series, percentages, ratios, profit & loss, time & work, time & distance.

Mathematics & Reasoning (MR)

  • Arithmetic: Simplification, LCM & HCF, decimal & fraction operations, profit & loss, partnership, algebraic expressions, time & work, time & distance, clocks and calendars.
  • Data Interpretation: Tables, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts & mixed graphs.
  • Logical Reasoning:
    • Seating arrangement
    • Coding & decoding
    • Blood relations
    • Direction & distance
    • Series & patterns
    • Analogy
  • Verbal Ability: Antonyms, synonyms, spelling, fill in the blanks, one-word substitution, and sentence improvement.
Tip: While GA and MR are separate sections, the difficulty levels are similar. Allocate equal study time to both and practice fulllength mock tests to build stamina.

Effective Preparation Strategy

  1. Know the Syllabus Inside Out: Download the official notification and mark the topics you are weak in.
  2. Create a Timetable: Dedicate 23 hours daily 1 hour for GA and 12 hours for MR. Include short breaks.
  3. Use Standard Reference Books:
    • General Awareness Manorama Yearbook and Lucents General Knowledge.
    • Mathematics Quantitative Aptitude by R.S. Aggarwal.
    • Reasoning Aptitude Test Book by Arihant.
  4. Practice Previous Year Papers: Solve at least the last 5 years question papers. Identify recurring question types.
  5. Take Mock Tests: Simulate the exact CBT environment 30 minutes per section, no negative marking during practice, then evaluate with penalty.
  6. Analyze Performance: After each mock, list the errors, understand why they occurred, and revise those concepts.
  7. Stay Updated: Read a reliable daily current affairs source (e.g., PIB releases, The Hindu) for GA.
  8. Physical Fitness: Some posts have medical standards. Maintain a healthy lifestyle to meet them.
