History & Growth

The university began as the Portland Extension Center of Oregon State College, offering night classes for returning World WarII veterans. In 1955 it became Portland State College, gaining the authority to award bachelors degrees. The name Portland State University was adopted in 1969, coinciding with the launch of graduate programs and the establishment of a research agenda.

Over the decades, PSU has expanded its campus across a 35acre urban site that includes the historic Lincoln Hall building, modern science labs, a renovated library, and the iconic "University Plaza" that overlooks the Willamette River.

Academics

PSU offers more than 200 undergraduate majors, minors, and preprofessional programs. The university is organized into eight colleges:
