Lamoni Community School District

1. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 7:00p.m. by President John L. Carpenter in the Lamoni High School Auditorium. A quorum of five board members was present.

3. Approval of Agenda

The agenda was reviewed and adopted with one amendment: addition of a public comment period after Item6.

4. Approval of Prior Minutes

Minutes from the May15,2017 meeting were approved as presented. No corrections were offered.

5. Public Comments

Four members of the public addressed the board:

• Ms. Carla Torres requested a review of the school bus route for Route3, citing safety concerns on County Road12.
• Mr. Eric Hammond asked for clarification on the new STEM grant application deadline.
• ParentTeacher Association (PTA) representative expressed gratitude for the recent library renovation.
• Dr. Samuel Greene (local dentist) offered to volunteer for the upcoming healthfair.

6. Financial Report

Chief Financial Officer Angela Perez presented the July financial statements:

• Cash balance at June30: $1,342,785
• Operating expenses for June: $112,436
• Bond repayment (principal) for June: $24,500
• Unrestricted fund balance: $845,210

The board approved the report and authorized the release of a quarterly fiscal newsletter to stakeholders.

7. Superintendents Report

Superintendent Dr. Laura M. Whitaker highlighted three key items:

1. Curriculum Update: Implementation of the new Kansas College and Career Ready standards will begin in the 20182019 school year. Professional development sessions are scheduled for August and September.
2. Facilities: The roofing project on the elementary wing is 45% complete; projected finish date is October5,2017.
3. Student Enrollment: 20172018 enrollment is projected at 1,134 students, a 1.8% increase over the previous year.

8. Board Resolutions

The board voted on the following resolutions:

• Resolution20170701: Approve a $150,000 supplemental budget for the elementary technology upgrade. Result: Passed unanimously.
• Resolution20170702: Adopt a new policy for TitleI fund allocation, emphasizing earlyintervention reading programs. Result: Passed 41.
• Resolution20170703: Authorize procurement of two additional schoolbus stop shelters at locations identified by the Transportation Committee. Result: Passed unanimously.

9. Committee Reports

Transportation Committee (Chair: Mark Hensley) reported that the revised bus schedule will reduce average ride time by 4minutes. The committee also recommended a $22,000 purchase of GPS tracking devices for the fleet.

Curriculum Committee (Chair: Rebecca Jensen) presented findings from the statewide STEM grant competition. The district received a provisional award of $250,000, pending final documentation.

10. Old Business

The board revisited the Summer School Expansion proposal submitted in March. After reviewing cost estimates, the board approved a pilot program for 45 additional slots, to be funded by reallocating surplus funds from the general fund.

11. New Business

A request was made to rename the John F. Kennedy Library in honor of a local veteran, Sergeant William H. Tate. The board decided to table the motion until a community survey could be completed.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:45p.m. The next regular board meeting is scheduled for September5,2017, at 7:00p.m. in the Lamoni High School Auditorium.
