Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test (K-TET) 2012: Category I Syllabus

The Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test (K-TET) is conducted to ensure that teachers recruited for schools in Kerala possess the necessary aptitude and ability to meet the challenges of teaching at the elementary level. Category I of the K-TET is specifically designed for candidates intending to teach Lower Primary classes (Class I to V).

Examination Structure

The K-TET Category I paper consists of 150 multiple-choice questions, each carrying one mark. The total duration of the examination is 150 minutes (2.5 hours). The syllabus is divided into five core sections, each focusing on essential pedagogical and subject-specific competencies.

This section assesses the candidate's understanding of the psychological aspects of teaching and learning at the primary stage.

  • Growth and Development: Stages, principles, and factors affecting development.
  • Socialization Processes: Social world and children (Teachers, Parents, Peers).
  • Piaget, Kohlberg, and Vygotsky: Constructs and critical perspectives.
  • Concepts of child-centered and progressive education.
  • Critical perspective of the construct of intelligence.
  • Multi-dimensional intelligence and language and thought.
  • Gender as a social construct: Gender roles, gender-bias, and educational practice.
  • Individual differences among learners.
  • Evaluation and Assessment: Concept of school-based evaluation, continuous and comprehensive evaluation.

2. Mathematics

This section evaluates the candidate's content knowledge and pedagogical approach to teaching mathematics at the primary level.

  • Content: Geometry, Shapes, Spatial understanding, Solids around us, Numbers, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Measurement, Weight, Time, Volume, Data Handling, and Patterns.
  • Pedagogical Issues: Nature of Mathematics, Place of Mathematics in the Curriculum, Language of Mathematics, Community Mathematics, Evaluation, and Diagnostic/Remedial teaching.

3. Environmental Studies (EVS)

This section focuses on the relationship between children and their environment, covering both social and natural sciences.

  • Content: Family, Work and Play, Animals, Plants, Food, Shelter, Water, Travel, Things we make and do.
  • Pedagogical Issues: Concept and scope of EVS, Significance of EVS, Environmental Studies and Environmental Education, Learning Principles, Scope and relation to Science and Social Science, Approaches to presenting concepts, Activities, and CCE.

4. Language I (Malayalam/Tamil/Kannada)

This section tests proficiency in the medium of instruction.

  • Language Comprehension: Reading unseen passages, poems, and interpreting meanings.
  • Pedagogy of Language Development: Learning and acquisition, Principles of language teaching, Role of listening and speaking, Challenges of teaching language in a diverse classroom, Language skills, Evaluation of proficiency, and Teaching-learning materials.

5. Language II (English)

This section focuses on basic English language proficiency and the ability to teach the language to young learners.

  • Comprehension: Two unseen prose passages (narrative/discursive) with questions on comprehension, grammar, and verbal ability.
  • Pedagogy of Language Development: Learning and acquisition, Challenges of teaching English in a multilingual Kerala context, Assessing proficiency (speaking, listening, reading, writing), and Remedial teaching strategies.

Qualifying Marks

A candidate is considered to have passed the K-TET exam if they secure a minimum of 60% of the total marks. Relaxations are provided for candidates belonging to SC/ST and OBC categories as per the government norms of Kerala.
