About the Network
The International Network of Researchers on Inclusive Finance (INRIF) is a global collaborative platform dedicated to advancing knowledge and understanding of financial inclusion through rigorous research, policy dialogue, and capacity building. Established in 2015, the network brings together scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and financial service providers from more than 50 countries to share insights, methodologies, and best practices in promoting financial accessibility for underserved populations.
Financial inclusion remains a critical challenge worldwide, with approximately 1.7 billion adults still lacking access to basic financial services according to recent World Bank estimates. The digital revolution has created unprecedented opportunities to expand financial services, but significant barriersincluding regulatory constraints, infrastructure limitations, and knowledge gapscontinue to impede progress. INRIF addresses these challenges through multidisciplinary research that bridges theory and practice, generating evidence-based solutions for policymakers and financial institutions.
The network operates under the principle that financial inclusion is not merely about providing access to financial services, but ensuring that these services are responsibly delivered, effectively utilized, and truly beneficial for the enhancement of livelihoods and economic empowerment.
Our diverse membership includes economists, development specialists, financial technology experts, researchers from leading universities, think tanks, and development agencies across six continents. This multidisciplinary composition enables INRIF to approach financial inclusion from multiple perspectives, incorporating insights from behavioral economics, gender studies, digital technology, and regulatory frameworks.
Our Mission and Objectives
INRIF's mission is to generate and disseminate high-quality research that contributes to the design, implementation, and evaluation of effective financial inclusion policies and practices worldwide. We aim to build a vibrant global community of researchers dedicated to understanding and addressing the complex challenges of expanding financial access to underserved populations.
Core Objectives

- Knowledge Dissemination: Facilitate the widespread sharing of research findings through publications, conferences, workshops, and digital platforms.
- Capacity Building: Strengthen research capabilities in developing countries through training programs, mentorship, and collaborative projects.
- Policy Engagement: Connect researchers with policymakers to ensure that evidence informs financial inclusion policies and regulatory frameworks.
- Global Collaboration: Foster international research partnerships that leverage diverse expertise, perspectives, and data sources.
- Methodological Innovation: Develop and promote cutting-edge research methods for studying financial inclusion, including experimental approaches, mixed methodologies, and big data analytics.
Key Activities
INRIF undertakes a wide range of activities to achieve its mission and objectives. These initiatives are designed to facilitate collaboration, generate knowledge, and translate research into actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners.
Annual Research Conference
Each year, INRIF hosts an international conference that brings together researchers, policymakers, and financial service providers to discuss emerging issues in financial inclusion. The conference features keynote presentations from leading experts, parallel paper presentation sessions, policy panels, and networking opportunities. Regional workshops and symposia are also organized throughout the year to address specific thematic areas and regional contexts.
Working Paper Series
INRIF publishes a regular working paper series featuring peer-reviewed research on financial inclusion. These papers represent cutting-edge research in the field and are made freely available to promote knowledge sharing. The series welcomes submissions from both members and non-members, ensuring a breadth of perspectives and methodologies.
Research Collaborations
The network facilitates research collaborations through thematic working groups focused on specific aspects of financial inclusion, such as digital financial services, gender and finance, agricultural finance, and financial consumer protection. These working groups connect researchers with shared interests and support the development of joint research projects and grant proposals.
Policy Dialogues
INRIF convenes policy dialogues that bring together researchers and policymakers to discuss evidence-based approaches to financial inclusion challenges. These forums facilitate the translation of research findings into practical policy recommendations and help align research agendas with policy priorities.
Capacity Building Programs
The network offers training programs for researchers, particularly those from developing countries, focusing on research methods relevant to financial inclusion studies. These programs include workshops on impact evaluation, qualitative research techniques, data collection methods, and academic writing and dissemination.
Membership
INRIF offers several membership categories designed to accommodate individuals and institutions with different levels of engagement and expertise in financial inclusion research and practice.
Individual Membership
Individual researchers may join the network as affiliate members, gaining access to working papers, conference discounts, and participation in working groups. Researchers can apply for full membership by demonstrating a record of research productivity relevant to financial inclusion. Full members enjoy voting rights in network governance and may hold leadership positions.
Institutional Membership
Universities, research centers, development agencies, and financial service providers can join as institutional members, which allows multiple representatives to participate in network activities and provides opportunities for hosting research projects and conferences. Institutional members receive recognition on network materials and priority consideration for collaborative opportunities.
Membership Benefits
- Access to the INRIF working paper series and publications
- Discounted registration for network conferences and events
- Eligibility for research grants and funding opportunities administered by the network
- Participation in thematic working groups and collaborative research projects
- Networking opportunities with leading researchers and practitioners in the field
- Voting rights and eligibility for leadership positions (for full members)
Membership applications can be submitted online through the INRIF website and are reviewed by the network's membership committee on a quarterly basis. The network particularly encourages applications from researchers and institutions in developing countries and from diverse disciplinary backgrounds.
Research Focus Areas
INRIF's research agenda is shaped by the evolving landscape of financial inclusion globally. Our current priority research areas include:
Digital Financial Services and Fintech Innovation
Exploring how mobile money, digital payments, blockchain technology, and other fintech innovations can expand financial access and usage. Our research examines both the opportunities and risks of digital financial inclusion, including issues related to digital literacy, consumer protection, and cybersecurity.
Gender and Financial Inclusion
Investigating the specific barriers that women face in accessing and using financial services, and evaluating interventions designed to promote women's financial empowerment. This research stream considers the social, cultural, and legal dimensions of gender gaps in finance.
Rural and Agricultural Finance
Developing and evaluating innovative approaches to providing financial services to smallholder farmers, rural entrepreneurs, and agrifood value chain actors. Research in this area addresses the particular challenges of rural finance, including seasonality, climate risk, and informal economies.
Microfinance and Enterprise Development
Assessing the impacts of microfinance and other enterprise support interventions on business performance, household welfare, and broader economic development. This research explores how financial services can be effectively combined with complementary interventions to support entrepreneurship.
Regulation and Supervision for Financial Inclusion
Analyzing how regulatory frameworks can promote financial inclusion while maintaining stability and protecting consumers. This comparative research examines different regulatory approaches to issues such as Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements, agent banking, and digital finance regulation.
Financial Consumer Protection and Financial Capability
Investigating strategies for protecting consumers of financial services and enhancing their financial capability. This research examines the design and impact of disclosure requirements, complaint resolution mechanisms, financial education programs, and consumer protection regulations.
