Girl Scouts of South Carolina Mountains to Midlands

Empowering girls to build the world's greatest resource girls.

The Girl Scouts of South Carolina Mountains to Midlands serves over 22,000 girls across 21 counties in South Carolina, stretching from the Blue Ridge Mountains in the north to the Pee Dee region in the south. As one of 11 councils in South Carolina, we are dedicated to building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

Our Service Area

Our council covers a diverse geographic region that includes urban centers like Columbia and Greenville, rural communities, and everything in between. This vast territory encompasses parts of the Appalachian Trail region, the Congaree National Park area, and several major metropolitan areas. Despite the varied landscape, our mission remains constant: to enable every girl to reach her full potential and develop essential life skills through meaningful experiences.

Programs and Activities

Girl Scouting offers a unique blend of outdoor adventures, leadership development, and life skills training. Our programs cater to girls ages 5-18 and are organized by grade-level affiliates:

  • Daisies (K-1st grade): Focus on friendship, community service, and basic outdoor skills
  • Brownies (2nd-3rd grade): Introduction to leadership through team-building activities
  • Junior (4th-5th grade): Independent project management and community impact initiatives
  • Cadette (6th-8th grade): Advanced leadership roles and specialized skill development
  • Senior (9th-10th grade): Mentorship opportunities and college and career preparation
  • Ambassador (11th-12th grade): Advocacy training and real-world problem solving

Leadership Development

What sets Girl Scouts apart is our emphasis on leadership development through hands-on experience. Unlike traditional programs where adults direct all activities, Girl Scouts learn by leading. Girls plan events, manage budgets, organize community service projects, and mentor younger members. This approach builds confidence that extends far beyond the troop meetings.

Our leadership training includes workshops on public speaking, project management, conflict resolution, and community organizing. We partner with local businesses and organizations to provide real-world leadership opportunities, such as serving on city council youth advisory boards or leading environmental conservation projects.

Outdoor Skills and Adventures

The outdoors play a crucial role in Girl Scout development. Our camp programs offer girls opportunities to develop outdoor skills while building independence and resilience. Summer camps range from day camps for younger girls to week-long residential experiences for older members.

Camping activities include hiking, rock climbing, zip-lining, canoeing, and wilderness survival skills. All activities are supervised by trained adult volunteers who ensure safety while encouraging girls to push their comfort zones in a supportive environment.

Girl Scouts develop practical life skills including first aid, navigation, cooking over open flames, and environmental stewardship. These experiences build confidence and teach valuable lessons about perseverance and teamwork.

Community Impact and Service

Service to others is fundamental to Girl Scouting. Our members regularly organize and participate in community service projects, from food drives and disaster relief efforts to environmental conservation and educational outreach. In 2023 alone, our members contributed over 150,000 volunteer hours to communities across our service area.

Recent impactful projects include:

  • Establishing pollinator gardens at local schools and libraries
  • Collecting and distributing school supplies to underserved families
  • Creating care packages for hospitalized children and military families
  • Organizing neighborhood clean-up events and recycling initiatives

The Cookie Program

Each spring, our cookie program provides girls with one of the most valuable business and life skills experiences available to pre-teens and teens. Through cookie sales, girls learn about goal-setting, customer service, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship.

Beyond earning cookies for their troops, girls decide how to use their cookie proceeds. Many troops allocate funds toward camp scholarships, leadership conference attendance, or community service projects. This experience teaches fiscal responsibility and the value of hard work while directly supporting Girl Scout programming.

Volunteer Opportunities

Our success depends entirely on volunteers both women who were Girl Scouts and community members who want to give back. Volunteer roles include troop leaders, camp counselors, event coordinators, and board members. No previous Girl Scout experience is necessary; we provide comprehensive training and ongoing support.

Volunteering with Girl Scouts offers personal rewards including flexible scheduling, networking opportunities, and the satisfaction of investing in future leaders. Background checks are required for all volunteers working directly with girls.
