Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, in Shrewsbury, England. Growing up in a wealthy and scientifically inclined family, his early interests leaned toward nature and collecting specimens. Although his father initially pushed him to pursue medicine at the University of Edinburgh, Darwin found the sight of surgery distressing and soon pivoted toward natural theology at Christs College, Cambridge. During his time in the Galpagos, Darwin observed that the finches and tortoises on different islands possessed distinct physical traits adapted to their specific environments. Upon returning to England, Darwin spent decades meticulously gathering evidence for his theory of natural selection. He proposed that within any population, individuals possess variations.
