The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is a national level board of education in India for public and private schools, controlled and managed by the Union Government of India. As one of the most prestigious and widely recognized educational boards in the country, CBSE serves a vast number of students across India and abroad. The primary focus of the board is to provide a robust, holistic, and stress-free education to students that develops their cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being.
Headquartered in New Delhi, CBSE affiliates all Kendriya Vidyalayas, all Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, private schools, and most of the schools approved by the Government of India. The board is committed to raising the academic standards of the country by constantly updating its curriculum and teaching methodologies to align with global educational trends.
The history of CBSE dates back to the early 20th century. In 1921, the first education board was established in India under the name of the "Uttar Pradesh Board of High School and Intermediate Education." It was under the jurisdiction of Rajputana, Central India, and Gwalior. In 1929, the government of India set up a joint Board named "Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Rajputana." This included Ajmer, Merwara, Central India, and Gwalior.
However, as education became more complex and the demand for a centralized curriculum grew, the government realized the need for a single board that could cater to educational institutions across the country, especially those managed by the central government. Consequently, in 1952, the Board was given its present name, "Central Board of Secondary Education." Over the decades, it has expanded its reach significantly, becoming the preferred choice for millions of students.
CBSE is governed by a hierarchical structure that ensures smooth administration and policy implementation. The Board is headed by the Chairman, who is usually a senior IAS officer or an eminent educationist appointed by the Government of India. The Chairman oversees the functioning of the board and is supported by various officials including the Director (Academic), Controller of Examinations, and Secretary.
Currently, CBSE has over 27,000 schools in India and 240 schools in 28 foreign countries affiliated to it.
The academic framework of CBSE is designed to be student-centric and comprehensive. It follows a "Continuum and Comprehensive Evaluation" approach in principle, focusing on the overall development of the student rather than just rote learning. The curriculum is structured in a way that builds knowledge progressively from one grade to the next.
The CBSE curriculum is divided into primary, secondary, and senior secondary levels. At the senior secondary level (Classes 11 and 12), the board offers a wide variety of streams to cater to different career aspirations:

According to the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the board is moving towards a more assessment-based approach involving projects and practicals alongside the final written exam.
The All India Senior School Certificate Examination is conducted for Class 12 students. The marks obtained in these examinations are critical for higher education admissions in universities across India and abroad. The scores are often used as a cut-off criterion for professional courses. The Class 12 exams are known for their rigorous standards and are held annually across thousands of centers.
Apart from the school examinations, CBSE also conducts major entrance examinations for higher education institutions, such as the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions and the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) for engineering. These exams play a pivotal role in shaping the career paths of Indian students.
