Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE)

Overview

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), popularly known as the Maharashtra Board, is the statutory body responsible for conducting secondary (Class10) and higher secondary (Class12) examinations in the state of Maharashtra, India. Established under the Maharashtra Secondary School Education Act, 1965, the Board functions from its headquarters in Mumbai and oversees more than 80,000 schools, both government and private.

Its primary objectives include:

  • Formulating syllabi and textbooks in collaboration with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).
  • Conducting standardized examinations and publishing results.
  • Ensuring quality assurance and accreditation of schools.
  • Providing training and professional development for teachers.

Organizational Structure

The Board is headed by a Chairman, who is a senior civil servant appointed by the state government. The executive hierarchy includes:

Each district has an Education Officer who acts as the Boards representative for local schools.

Examinations Conducted

The Board conducts two major public examinations each year:

1. Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Class10

  • Examination usually held in March.
  • Subjects: Marathi, English, Hindi, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, plus optional languages.
  • Assessment comprises theory papers, internal practicals (Science), and project work.

2. Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Class12

  • Examination usually held in FebruaryMarch.
  • Three streams: Science, Commerce, and Arts.
  • Each stream has compulsory core subjects and optional electives.

Important dates are announced on the official website and through school circulars. Late registrations are permitted only under exceptional circumstances and attract a nominal fee.

Curriculum and Syllabi

Curriculum development is a collaborative effort between MSBSHSE and SCERT. The process follows these steps:

  1. Needs analysis based on national education policy and state requirements.
  2. Drafting of syllabus outlines by subject experts.
  3. Public consultations with teachers, parents, and industry stakeholders.
  4. Finalization and approval by the Boards Curriculum Committee.
  5. Publication of textbooks in Marathi, English and Hindi.

The current syllabus emphasizes competencybased learning, digital literacy, and life skills. Notable additions include:

  • Environmental Education across all grades.
  • Computer Science and coding basics in secondary school.
  • Entrepreneurship modules in the Commerce stream.
  • Inclusive education provisions for children with special needs.

Results, Grading and Certification

Results are released online on the official portal and are also printed as hard copies. The Board follows a 100point grading system with the following classification:

The Board recognises high achievers through several schemes:

  • State Merit Scholarship: Awarded to the top 0.5% of HSC candidates in each stream.
  • Rashtriya Ekalavya Samman: For students excelling in sports, arts, and cultural activities.
  • Pratibha Scholarship: Supports meritorious students from economically weaker sections.

Career counselling sessions are organised at the district level, providing guidance on higher education options, entrance examinations, and vocational courses.
