About the Competition

The 24th ALSA National English Competition is an annual event organized by the Asian Law Students' Association to promote English language proficiency among students across the country. Since its inception, the competition has attracted thousands of participants from various universities, fostering linguistic excellence and cultural exchange.

This year, the competition celebrates its 24th edition with exciting new challenges, renowned judges, and impressive prizes. The event aims to provide a platform for students to showcase their English language skills in various categories including Debate, Speech, Storytelling, and more.

Participants will have the opportunity to enhance their public speaking abilities, critical thinking skills, and English proficiency while networking with fellow students from different institutions. The competition follows international standards and is recognized as one of the most prestigious language competitions in the country.

ALSA (Asian Law Students' Association) is a non-political, non-profit organization of law students in Asia. Founded in 1989, ALSA has grown to become one of the largest law student associations in Asia, with chapters in 16 countries. The organization aims to promote international understanding, cooperation, and unity among law students.

Competition Categories

Debate

Teams of two will engage in parliamentary-style debates on contemporary issues, testing their argumentation, rebuttal skills, and quick thinking. Participants will debate on topics ranging from international relations to social policies.

Speech

Participants will deliver prepared speeches on given topics, demonstrating their ability to articulate ideas clearly, persuasively, and eloquently. Speeches will be judged on content, delivery, and overall impact.

Storytelling

Contestants will showcase their narrative abilities by presenting original or adapted stories, focusing on expression, creativity, and engagement. This category encourages participants to connect with audiences through compelling narratives.

Essay Writing

Participants will produce written essays on assigned topics within a time limit, highlighting their writing skills, grammar, vocabulary, and ability to structure a coherent argument.

Drama Performance

Teams of 3-5 will perform short plays in English, focusing on dialogue delivery, expression, creativity, and overall stage presence. Plays can be adaptations of classic works or original scripts.

News Reading

Contestants will read news segments, demonstrating proper pronunciation, intonation, and the ability to maintain a professional broadcasting style. This category tests communication skills in a journalistic context.

Upload your student ID, proof of registration, and a recent photograph for identification purposes.

Complete Payment

Pay the registration fee of $25 per category or $100 for all categories. Payment can be made via bank transfer or credit card.

You'll receive a confirmation email with details about preliminary rounds and preparation materials.

Who can participate in the competition?

The competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in universities across the country. International students studying in local universities are also welcome to participate. Participants must be between 18-25 years old.

Can I participate in multiple categories?

Yes, you can register for multiple categories. However, please note that some preliminary rounds may overlap, and it might be challenging to participate in competitions scheduled at the same time. We recommend carefully checking the schedule before registering for multiple events.

Is there a dress code for the competition?

For the preliminary rounds, smart-casual attire is acceptable. For the semi-finals and finals, participants are expected to wear formal business attire. Appropriate dress reflects professionalism and respect for the competition and other participants.

Are there any preparation materials provided?

Yes, upon successful registration, participants will receive a welcome package containing preparation guidelines, sample topics, practice exercises, and resources for each competition category. We also recommend reviewing past competitions' materials available on our website.

What is the judging criteria for each category?

Each category has specific judging criteria based on language proficiency, content, delivery, creativity, and relevance. Detailed rubrics will be provided to registered participants through their accounts. Judges are selected based on their expertise in the respective field and English language teaching.

Is accommodation provided for out-of-town participants?

While the competition does not provide accommodation, we have partnered with several hotels near the venue offering special rates for competition participants. Details and booking codes will be shared upon registration. We also provide a list of affordable accommodation options for students.

Can family and friends attend the competition?

Yes, preliminary rounds are open to the public free of charge. For the finals, limited tickets will be available for purchase at $10 each. Registered participants will receive two complimentary tickets for the finals. Seating is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

What happens if I need to withdraw from the competition?

If you need to withdraw, please inform us immediately at ne_competition@alsa-national.org. Withdrawals before September 15, 2023, will receive a 50% refund of registration fees. Withdrawals after this date are not eligible for refunds. In case of medical emergencies with proper documentation, the committee reviews each case individually.
