Celebrations at the Consulate General of India, Toronto The Consulate General of India in Toronto proudly hosts two vibrant celebrations that showcase Indias linguistic heritage and its thriving diaspora: Vishwa Hindi Divas (World Hindi Day) and Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (NonResident Indian Day). Both events bring together diplomats, scholars, business leaders, cultural icons, and members of the local Indian community to honour Hindi as a global language and to recognise the contributions of overseas Indians to Canada and the world. Observed worldwide on 10January, Vishwa Hindi Divas commemorates the birthday of the great poet and freedom fighter **MahatmaGandhi**, whose ideals gave Hindi a universal platform. At the Consulate General, the day is marked with a blend of scholarly dialogue, cultural performances, and community outreach. Dr. Ramesh Sharma, former DirectorGeneral of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, will speak on Hindi as a Bridge between Cultures. The address will explore how Hindi literature, film, and digital media foster crosscultural understanding. Renowned poet **Ananda Kumar** will recite contemporary Hindi poems, followed by an interactive storytelling session for children from the Toronto Public Librarys Little Scholars program. Beginner and intermediate level classes led by certified instructors from **Hindi Samvaad** will introduce participants to conversational Hindi, Devanagari script, and key cultural idioms. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated on 9January to honour the return of the Indian diasporas first envoy, **Maharaja Ranjit Singh**, to India in 1914. The Consulates PBD program highlights the achievements of IndianCanadians across sectors such as technology, health, arts, and public service. The evening welcome will feature a traditional **sitar** performance, a reception catered by **Bawarchi Kitchen**, and a briefing on the upcoming **Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards**. Panelists include: The dialogue will examine how diaspora talent drives innovation, strengthens IndoCanadian trade, and shapes policy. Five distinguished members of the Indian diaspora will receive the **Pravasi Bharatiya Samman** for their exceptional contribution to IndiaCanada relations.
