Virginia Tech Student Health Insurance Plan (VT SHIP)

Overview

The Virginia Tech Student Health Insurance Plan (VTSHIP) is a comprehensive healthinsurance option that meets the requirements of the Virginia Board of Medicine for fulltime students. It is designed to provide coverage for medical, mentalhealth, and prescriptiondrug services while students are enrolled at Virginia Tech, whether they live oncampus, offcampus, or study abroad.

Eligibility

All fulltime undergraduate and graduate students are automatically eligible for VTSHIP. Students may choose to optout if they can demonstrate that they have comparable coverage through another source.

  • Fulltime status = 12 credit hours (undergraduate) or 9 credit hours (graduate)
  • International students on F1 or J1 visas
  • Students on a leave of absence may keep coverage for a limited period

If you decline VTSHIP, you must provide proof of alternative health insurance that meets Virginia law requirements by the enrollment deadline.

VTSHIP follows the Virginia Medicaid fee schedule for most services and includes the following core benefits:
