Why Valence Matters
Understanding valence patterns is crucial for several reasons:
- Syntactic Correctness: Using a verb with the wrong valence leads to ungrammatical sentences (e.g., "He gave," which feels incomplete because "give" is inherently trivalent).
- Language Learning: Students of foreign languages often struggle because valence patterns differ between languages. A verb that is transitive in one language may be intransitive or reflexive in another.
- Computational Linguistics: Machines need to understand argument structures to perform accurate semantic analysis, enabling better translation and information extraction.
Valence Alternations
Some verbs exhibit "valence alternation," where their valence can change depending on how they are used. For instance, the "causative alternation" allows an intransitive verb to be used transitively by adding a causative agent.
Example: "The door opened" (Monovalent) vs. "He opened the door" (Divalent). In the second instance, "He" has been added to the argument structure, effectively increasing the valence of the verb "open."
