UPSC Prelims Syllabus 2020

Introduction

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) in three stages Preliminary, Mains and Interview. The Preliminary examination is an objectivetype test that serves as a screening round for the Mains. In 2020 the syllabus was streamlined to focus on relevance, clarity and interdisciplinary linkages. This page summarises the complete 2020 syllabus, offering a quick reference for aspirants.

General Studies Paper I (CSAT) 2020

This paper tests the candidates aptitude, reasoning and analytical abilities. It carries 200 marks, of which 33% are qualifying in nature (i.e., a candidate must score at least 33% to qualify for the Mains). The sections are:

• Comprehension 1 passage, 1012 questions.
• Logical Reasoning & Analytical Ability puzzles, seating arrangements, syllogisms, data interpretation.
• DecisionMaking and ProblemSolving case studies and situational questions.
• Basic Numeracy numbers, percentages, ratio, simple algebra, data interpretation.
• General Mental Ability series, clocks, calendar, codingdecoding.

There is no negative marking; candidates should attempt all questions. Preparation should focus on speed, accuracy and regular practice of mock tests.

General Studies PaperII (GSI) 2020

The main objective of GSI is to assess knowledge of the world, Indian heritage and governance, and to test analytical skills. The paper is of 200 marks, consisting of 100 multiplechoice questions.

2. History

• Ancient: Indus Valley, Vedic period, major dynasties.

• Modern: British conquest, Revolt of 1857, National Movement (18851947).
• PostIndependence: Major political, socioeconomic developments.

3. Geography

• Physical geography geomorphology, climate, oceans.
• Human geography population, migration, settlement patterns.
• Indian geography rivers, mountains, resources, environment.
• World geography continents, major physical features.

4. Indian Polity & Governance

• Constitution Preamble, salient features, amendments.
• Union and State Executive, Legislature, Judiciary.
• Fundamental rights, duties, directive principles.
• Local selfgovernment Panchayati Raj, Municipalities.
• Public policy, accountability, transparency mechanisms.

5. Economic Development

• Indian economy growth, inflation, fiscal & monetary policy.
• Planning FiveYear Plans, NITI Aayog, Sustainable Development Goals.
• Agriculture, industry, services sector trends.
• Banking, financial inclusion, digital economy.

6. Science & Technology

• Space, defence, nuclear programmes.
• Information technology, egovernance, cybersecurity.
• New discoveries, patents, biotechnology, renewable energy.

7. Environment & Ecology

• Biodiversity, conservation, climate change, pollution.
• Environmental legislation Air & Water Acts, Wildlife Protection.
• International protocols Paris Agreement, Kyoto Protocol.

8. Security Issues

• Internal security terrorism, insurgency, leftwing extremism.
• Border management, cyber security, disaster management.

Studying NCERT textbooks (class612) and referring to standard reference books for each subject area can cover the entire syllabus effectively.

Optional Subjects (for Mains Overview)

While the syllabus above pertains to the Preliminary stage, candidates often start early preparation for the optional paper in the Mains. The UPSC allows one of the following 47 subjects as an optional:

• Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce & Accountancy, Economics, Geography, History, Law, Management, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science & International Relations, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Statistics, and many language papers.

Each optional has a detailed syllabus covering both PaperI and PaperII (each 250 marks). Aspirants should choose a subject aligned with their academic background and interest.
