Updates from the Office of Adult Education

Welcome to the quarterly update from the Office of Adult Education. We are dedicated to providing high-quality educational opportunities for adults in our community, helping learners achieve their personal, professional, and academic goals. This autumn, we have several exciting initiatives, program updates, and resources to share with our partners, instructors, and students.

New Curriculum Launch: Digital Literacy in the Modern Workplace

We are thrilled to announce the rollout of our updated Digital Literacy curriculum. In response to the evolving demands of the local job market, this new module focuses specifically on practical applications of technology in professional settings.

• Cloud Collaboration: Understanding how to use platforms like Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 for team projects.
• Cybersecurity Basics: Recognizing phishing attempts and creating secure passwords for personal and professional safety.
• Data Management: Introductory skills in spreadsheets and data organization.

Instructors will receive access to the new training materials by the first of next month, and professional development workshops will be held to familiarize teachers with the lesson plans.

Expanding High School Equivalency (HSE) Support

Passing the High School Equivalency exam remains a top priority for many of our learners. To support this goal, we have increased the number of testing centers and extended operating hours at existing locations.

Additionally, we have partnered with local libraries to offer "HSE Prep Circles." These are informal, peer-led study groups that provide a space for students to practice test-taking strategies and receive homework help outside of the formal classroom environment. We believe that community support is a critical factor in student success, and these circles are designed to foster a sense of belonging and mutual encouragement.

Grant Opportunities for Community Partners

We are specifically looking for proposals that address barriers to education, such as transportation, childcare, or lack of digital access. Applications are due by November 30th. Please visit the grants section of our internal portal for the full application packet and guidelines.

Professional Development: Trauma-Informed Instruction

Recognizing that many adult learners bring diverse life experiences into the classroom, we are hosting a series of workshops on Trauma-Informed Instruction. These sessions will equip educators with strategies to create a safe and supportive learning environment.

The training will cover:

• Understanding the physiological impact of stress and trauma on learning.
• Techniques for de-escalation and emotional regulation in the classroom.
• Building resilience through a strengths-based approach to education.

The workshop will be available both in-person and via webinar starting next week. All staff are strongly encouraged to attend.

Student Success Stories

We want to celebrate the achievements of our learners. Over the past quarter, over 150 students have successfully passed their HSE exams, and 75 have completed specialized certification tracks in healthcare and information technology.

One standout story comes from our evening ESL program. A group of students organized a community bake sale to raise funds for classroom supplies. This initiative not only raised money but also empowered the students to practice their English language skills in a real-world context. Their leadership and initiative demonstrate the incredible potential within our adult learner community.

Looking Ahead

As we move toward the end of the year, the Office of Adult Education remains committed to removing obstacles and opening doors for adult learners. We are currently reviewing our strategic plan for the upcoming fiscal year and will be seeking feedback from stakeholders in January.
