International Student Handbook: University of Rio Grande

Welcome to the University of Rio Grande. We are delighted to have you as part of our diverse academic community. This handbook is designed to assist you in navigating your transition to life in the United States and to ensure you remain in compliance with your visa requirements.

Maintaining Your Immigration Status

As an international student, your primary responsibility is to maintain your legal status in the United States. Failure to do so can have serious consequences for your ability to study in this country.

  • Enrollment Requirements: You must maintain a "full course of study" during each fall and spring semester. Undergraduate students are generally required to carry a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester.
  • Passport Validity: Always keep your passport valid for at least six months into the future.
  • Address Updates: If you move, you must report your new local address to the International Student Office within 10 days of moving.
  • Form I-20: Keep your I-20 document in a safe place. If you plan to travel outside the U.S., you must obtain a travel signature from a Designated School Official (DSO) on your I-20.

Academic Integrity and Expectations

The University of Rio Grande prides itself on high academic standards. Students are expected to approach their studies with honesty and diligence.

Plagiarism Policy: Academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, cheating, or the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence, is strictly prohibited. All sources used in your assignments must be properly cited according to your professor's requirements.

Campus Services and Resources

We provide a variety of resources to help you succeed both academically and personally:

  • The Tutoring Center: Offers free academic support for various subjects to ensure you meet your educational goals.
  • Career Services: Assists students with resume building, internship searches, and understanding CPT/OPT work authorizations.
  • Health and Wellness: The campus health clinic is available for basic medical needs. It is mandatory for all international students to maintain health insurance coverage while enrolled.

Living on Campus

Living in the residence halls is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the American college experience. Students living on campus are encouraged to participate in student organizations and attend campus events to build a strong community network.

Travel Guidelines

Before you leave the United States for a break or a holiday, ensure you have the following:

  1. A current I-20 with a valid travel signature (less than one year old).
  2. A valid visa stamp in your passport (if the visa is expired, you will need to apply for a new one at a U.S. Consulate abroad).
  3. Documentation of your current enrollment.

Contact Information

If you have questions regarding your visa, employment eligibility, or any other international student matters, please visit the International Student Office located in the Student Services building. You may also schedule an appointment via the university portal.

We look forward to supporting your academic journey at the University of Rio Grande.
