The United States Armed Forces are the military forces of the United States of America. They consist of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard. The President of the United States is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and forms military policy with the Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS), both federal executive departments, acting as the principal organs by which military policy is carried out.
All six armed services are among the eight uniformed services of the United States. Each service plays a distinct role in protecting national security and defending the values of the nation. From land and sea operations to air superiority and space defense, the collective capabilities of these branches represent the most powerful military in the world.
Motto: "This We'll Defend"
The United States Army is the oldest and largest of the six branches. Founded on June 14, 1775, as the Continental Army to fight the American Revolutionary War, it is the land service branch of the Armed Forces. The Army is primarily responsible for military operations on land and is the main branch tasked with holding territory and engaging in sustained ground combat.
As the largest branch, it is equipped with a vast array of vehicles, including tanks, armored personnel carriers, and artillery, alongside hundreds of thousands of active duty soldiers. The Army National Guard serves as a reserve component, capable of being mobilized for federal service while also serving the states during domestic emergencies.
Motto: "Semper Fidelis" (Always Faithful)
The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a maritime service branch responsible for providing power projection, using the mobility of the United States Navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces on land. Established on November 10, 1775, the Marines have a unique culture and identity within the military structure.
While they operate closely with the Navy, the Marine Corps is a distinct branch. It specializes in amphibious operationsassaulting enemy beaches from the seawhich requires intense training and specialized equipment. Marines are often the first on the ground in crisis situations, acting as a rapid-response force capable of conducting expeditionary operations.
Motto: "Semper Fortis" (Always Courageous)
The United States Navy is the naval warfare service branch. Founded on October 13, 1775, it is the largest and most capable navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The Navy maintains, trains, and equips combat-ready naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression, and maintaining freedom of the seas.
Nuclear-powered aircraft carriers serve as the centerpieces of the Navys fleet, acting as mobile airfields that can project American air power anywhere in the world. The Navy also operates submarines, cruisers, destroyers, and amphibious assault ships. Its mission includes securing maritime trade routes and supporting other branches during joint operations.
Motto: "Aim High... Fly-Fight-Win"
The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch. Originally part of the Army as the Army Air Forces, it was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947. The Air Force is responsible for aerial military operations and defending the United States and its interests from the air and space.
Modern air warfare involves sophisticated technologies, including stealth fighters like the F-22 and F-35, strategic bombers, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The Air Force also plays a critical role in cyber warfare and intelligence gathering. It provides the air support necessary for Army and Marine ground operations and ensures airspace superiority.
Motto: "Semper Supra" (Always Above)
The United States Space Force (USSF) is the newest branch of the Armed Forces, established on December 20, 2019. It is the space warfare service branch and is organized as a military service branch within the Department of the Air Force. The creation of the Space Force recognized the vital role space plays in national security and modern warfare.
The Space Force is responsible for organizing, training, and equipping space forces. Its mission includes protecting U.S. interests in space, providing space capabilities to the joint force, and developing military space professionals. Guardians, as members are called, manage satellites, monitor space threats, and ensure the U.S. maintains freedom of action in the domain of space.
Motto: "Semper Paratus" (Always Ready)
The United States Coast Guard is unique among the military branches because it operates under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime, but can be transferred to the Department of the Navy by the President or Congress during times of war. Founded on August 4, 1790 by Alexander Hamilton as the Revenue Marine, it is the oldest continuous seagoing service of the United States.
The Coast Guards missions are maritime safety, security, and stewardship. They enforce laws at sea, conduct search and rescue operations, protect the marine environment, and interdict drug smuggling and illegal immigration. Although they are not purely a combat force, they are a military service with a law enforcement capability and are essential to the security of the nation's ports and waterways.
While each branch has a specific identity and culture, they operate together under the Unified Combatant Commands. These are joint military commands composed of forces from two or more service branches. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the highest-ranking military officer in the Armed Forces and the principal military advisor to the President, Secretary of Defense, and the National Security Council. This joint structure ensures that the land, sea, air, and space capabilities of the United States are integrated effectively to meet strategic goals and national defense requirements.
