Course Overview

Math 122X Essential Precalculus with Applications is a foundational mathematics course that provides students with the necessary mathematical preparation for calculus and other advanced mathematics courses. This course emphasizes the understanding and application of functions, graphs, and equations in various contexts, with particular focus on real-world applications relevant to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of Math 122X, students will be able to:

Prerequisites

Student learning will be assessed through the following methods:

Important Grading Information

A grade of C- or higher in Math 122X is required to satisfy prerequisite requirements for Math 200 Calculus I. Students earning a grade of D+ or lower will need to retake the course before advancing to calculus.

  • Copying or allowing others to copy homework, quizzes, or exams

Course Policies

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance is strongly recommended as mathematical concepts build upon each other. While attendance may not be taken daily in all sections, students are responsible for all material presented in class, including schedule changes and announcements. Excessive absence (typically more than three unexcused absences) may result in a lowering of the course grade.

Missed Work Policy

Late homework may be accepted with a penalty of 10% per day for up to three days after the deadline. Quizzes and exams may only be made up with documented emergencies and prior notification when possible. Documentation such as a medical excuse note must be provided for missed exams.

Calculator Policy

A graphing calculator is required for this course. The TI-83 Plus, TI-84, or TI-Nspire are recommended. The instructor will specify which calculator features may be used during quizzes and exams. Calculators with computer algebra systems (CAS) or those capable of symbolic manipulation may not be permitted on assessments.
