What is TwoWay Immersion (TWI)?

TwoWay Immersion is a duallanguage instructional model that brings together native speakers of two languagestypically English and a minority languageso that each group learns academically while becoming proficient in the partner language. In a TWI classroom, instruction is split roughly 50% in each language, and students rotate between languagespecific teaching teams. The goal is balanced bilingualism and biliteracy for all participants.

Implementation in TTSD Elementary Schools

TTSD (TriTown School District) launched its TwoWay Immersion program in the 20222023 school year, beginning with three pilot schools. The program follows a phased rollout:

1. Community Outreach: Townhall meetings, parentinformation sessions, and surveys to gauge interest.
2. Teacher Recruitment & Training: Hiring certified bilingual teachers and providing intensive TWI professional development.
3. Curriculum Alignment: Mapping state standards to the duallanguage framework.
4. Classroom Scheduling: Creating 50/50 language blocks and rotating language teams each semester.
5. Assessment & Feedback: Ongoing bilingual proficiency testing and academic monitoring.

By the 20252026 school year, the program expanded to six elementary sites, serving over 800 students.

Curriculum Model and Language Allocation

Each core subject follows the states academic standards, but lesson plans incorporate language objectives. For example, a science unit on ecosystems might be taught in English during the first half of the week, then revisited in Spanish, with bilingual vocabulary cards and collaborative projects.

Key components of the TWI curriculum:

• Language Objectives: Every lesson lists what students will be able to say, read, and write in each language.
• ContentBased Instruction (CBI): Language is the vehicle, not the focus. Content mastery drives language use.
