The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings

The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings are a unique global initiative designed to assess how universities around the world are performing against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Unlike traditional university rankings, which often prioritize research prestige and academic reputation, the Impact Rankings measure the real-world influence of higher education institutions.

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. These goals form the foundation of the THE Impact Rankings, providing a framework for universities to demonstrate their commitment to social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

How the Methodology Works

To participate in the Impact Rankings, universities must submit data regarding their contributions to the SDGs. The methodology is built upon four primary pillars:

  • Research: How universities are generating knowledge to help achieve specific goals.
  • Stewardship: How universities manage their own resources and internal operations to promote sustainability.
  • Outreach: How universities engage with their local, national, and international communities to foster change.
  • Teaching: How universities prepare students to contribute to sustainable development in their future careers.

The Importance of Measuring Impact

Traditionally, global university rankings have been criticized for favoring well-funded, elite institutions that have access to vast research budgets. The THE Impact Rankings shift this narrative by focusing on an institution's societal contribution. This allows smaller, regionally focused, or mission-driven universities to gain international recognition for their work in areas like gender equality, climate action, and community development.

For prospective students, researchers, and policymakers, these rankings provide a transparent look at which universities are walking the talk when it comes to social responsibility. It helps students choose institutions that align with their personal values regarding sustainability and ethical practice.

Key Focus Areas

While the ranking evaluates performance across all 17 SDGs, universities are required to submit data for at least four goals to be eligible for the overall ranking. One of these must always be SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. This specific goal is mandatory because it measures how universities collaborate with other countries, promote best practices, and publish data regarding their efforts toward the SDGs.

Other goals frequently highlighted include:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being: Focusing on research regarding major diseases and support for local health services.
  • SDG 5: Gender Equality: Evaluating policies on pay equity, recruitment, and promotion of women in academia.
  • SDG 13: Climate Action: Measuring carbon footprint reductions and local community education initiatives.

The Future of Higher Education

The THE Impact Rankings have sparked a global conversation about the purpose of a university in the 21st century. Institutions are increasingly aligning their strategic plans with the SDGs to improve their standing in these rankings, which in turn accelerates global efforts toward sustainability. By incentivizing universities to focus on societal output, THE has helped transform higher education from a closed-loop academic pursuit into an active engine for global positive change.
