History

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) was founded in 1915 by three mathematiciansThomas A.H.Murray, Maxime Boole, and John J.Kelleywho sought a national organization devoted specifically to collegiate mathematics. In its early years the Association focused on improving mathematics teaching at the undergraduate level, a priority that still defines its core mission today.

In 1916 the MAA incorporated as a nonprofit entity under the laws of the State of New York, a legal step that gave the group the ability to own property, receive taxdeductible donations, and formalize its governance structures.
