Principles of Surveying with a Level Instrument
Surveying is a fundamental discipline in civil engineering and construction, essential for mapping terrain and ensuring the accurate placement of structures. One of the most common and vital tasks in surveying is "leveling," which is the process of determining the relative heights (elevations) of points on the earth's surface.
What is a Level Instrument?
A level instrument, or "dumpy level" or "automatic level," is an optical instrument used to establish or verify points in the same horizontal plane. It consists of a high-quality telescope, a sensitive spirit bubble (or automatic compensator), and a leveling head, all mounted on a tripod.

- Telescope: Used to magnify the view of the leveling staff.

The Leveling Staff
The level instrument cannot function alone. It requires a leveling staff, which is a graduated rod used to measure the vertical distance between the line of sight of the level and the ground point being surveyed. When the surveyor looks through the telescope, they read the measurement on the staff at the exact point where the horizontal crosshair intersects it.
Step-by-Step Leveling Procedure
To perform a leveling survey accurately, one must follow a precise set of operations:
- Setup: Position the tripod firmly on solid ground. Attach the level instrument and ensure the tripod head is approximately level.
- Levelling the Instrument: Using the foot screws, manipulate the instrument until the spirit bubble is centered. In automatic levels, once the bubble is roughly centered, the internal compensator fine-tunes the horizontal line.
- Focusing: Direct the telescope toward the staff. Use the focusing knob to ensure the graduations on the staff are clear and sharp to the surveyor's eye.
- Taking Readings: The staff holder keeps the rod strictly vertical. The surveyor records the reading shown by the horizontal crosshair.
- Calculation: By moving the instrument or the staff between various points, surveyors calculate the "Rise" or "Fall" between two points to determine their relative elevation.
Types of Leveling
There are several methods used depending on the project requirements:
- Simple Leveling: Performed when two points are visible from a single position of the level.
- Differential Leveling: Used to find the difference in elevation between two points that are far apart, involving multiple setups and a series of "back-sights" and "fore-sights."
- Profile Leveling: Used to determine the elevations of points along a specific line, such as the centerline of a proposed road or pipeline.
Importance in Modern Construction
Accurate leveling is critical for drainage, earthworks, and structural integrity. Without proper leveling, roads would not drain correctly, buildings would have uneven foundations, and water infrastructure would fail to function. Even with the advent of GPS and laser technology, the traditional optical level remains a standard for its reliability, cost-effectiveness, and precision in local site surveys.

For the most accurate results, surveyors should always ensure the staff is held plumb (perfectly vertical) and avoid taking readings over long distances where atmospheric refraction can distort the image. Consistent maintenance of the instrument, specifically keeping the lenses clean and checking the calibration of the internal compensator, is also vital for high-precision projects.
