Overview
Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is a tropical and subtropical grass that thrives in warm, humid environments. Nepal, once considered a minor player in SouthAsian sugar production, has gradually expanded its cultivated area over the past two decades. The crop is grown primarily for the production of raw sugar, jaggery (known locally as gula), and as a source of byproducts like bagasse for power generation.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the total sugarcanecultivated area in Nepal reached approximately 37,000 hectares in 2023, producing close to 700,000 metric tons of raw cane. Most of the production is concentrated in the Terai lowlands, where the climate and soil conditions are most favorable.
Climate & Growing Regions
The Terai region, stretching along the southern border of Nepal, provides the ideal combination of temperature (24C to 32C) and rainfall (1,2002,000mm annually) for sugarcane. The three main sugarcaneproducing districts are:
- Jhapa Known for its fertile alluvial soils and welldistributed monsoon rains.
- Sarlahi Benefits from a flat landscape, enabling mechanised planting and harvesting.
- Mahottari Has a long irrigation network that supports a second cropping cycle in some farms.
Higher elevations, such as the midhills, experience cooler temperatures and limited rainfall, making them unsuitable for commercial sugarcane cultivation. However, experimental trials with shortduration varieties are beginning to emerge in these zones.
Cultivation Practices
Modern sugarcane production in Nepal follows a cycle of 1012months from planting to harvest. The key steps include:
- Land preparation Plowing and harrowing to a fine tilth, followed by levelling to ensure uniform water distribution.
- Planting material Farmers use either setts (cut sections of mature stalks) or vegetative sprouts from selected varieties such as Co 86030 and Co 1400.
- Irrigation During the dry season, supplemental irrigation from canals and tube wells is essential. A typical irrigation schedule supplies 600800mm of water over the crop cycle.
- Fertilization The recommended nutrient regimen is 150kg N, 80kg PO, and 100kg KO per hectare, applied in split doses.
- Pest & disease management Major threats include the sugarcane borer (Scirpophaga praecox) and ratoon stunt disease. Integrated pest management (IPM) and the use of resistant varieties have reduced yield losses to under 10% in wellmanaged farms.
- Harvesting Mechanical harvesters are increasingly used in larger estates, while smallholders rely on manual cutting with sickles. Ratoon cropping (harvesting subsequent stalks from the same root system) is practiced to improve land use efficiency.

Economic Impact
Sugarcane contributes significantly to rural livelihoods. Roughly 120,000 Nepali families rely directly on cane farming, while an additional 40,000 are employed in processing, transport, and ancillary services.
Key economic indicators:
- Domestic Sugar Production Satisfies about 70% of national sugar demand; the remainder is imported mainly from India.
- Export Potential Excess raw cane is sold to neighboring Indian mills, generating modest foreign exchange earnings.
- Byproduct Utilisation Bagasse, the fibrous residue after juice extraction, fuels several Nepalese power plants, delivering an estimated 120MW of renewable electricity.
- Price Trends The average price for raw cane has risen from NPR15kg in 2015 to NPR22kg in 2023, reflecting improved market linkages and higher input costs.
