Program Overview
The Statistical Leadership Training Programme (SLTP) for the Arab Statistical System is a comprehensive capacity-building initiative designed to equip present and future leaders of national statistical offices across the Arab region with advanced skills in statistical management and leadership. This innovative program addresses the critical need for strengthening statistical infrastructure and capabilities in member countries to support evidence-based policymaking and sustainable development.
Program Vision: To create a network of highly skilled statistical leaders who can transform national statistical systems to meet emerging data challenges and support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Arab region.
Launched in 2021 through a collaborative effort between the Arab Institute for Training and Research in Statistics (AITRS), regional statistical organizations, and international development partners, the program has trained over 150 statistical professionals from 17 Arab countries in its first three cohorts.
Program Objectives
The SLTP aims to achieve several key objectives:
- Enhance leadership capabilities of senior and mid-level statistical professionals
- Strengthen strategic planning and management functions within national statistical offices
- Improve coordination and collaboration across the Arab statistical system
- Modernize statistical production processes
- Enhance data quality and dissemination practices
- Build capacity for integrating new data sources and methodologies
- Foster innovation in statistical products and services
- Strengthen communication skills for statistical advocacy

Target Audience
The program is designed for professionals currently working in national statistical offices, statistics departments of line ministries, and central banks across Arab League member countries. Priority is given to:
- Senior officials currently in or aspiring to leadership positions in statistical organizations (Deputy Director Generals, Directors of Departments, etc.)
- Mid-level managers with significant leadership responsibilities
- Key technical staff identified as future leaders of their organizations
- Statistical professionals involved in SDG monitoring and reporting
- Staff responsible for statistical quality assurance and innovation initiatives
Selection criteria include professional experience, managerial responsibilities, potential for future leadership, and ability to implement program learnings within their organizations.
Program Structure and Curriculum
The Statistical Leadership Training Programme is delivered through a blended learning approach spanning 12 months, combining face-to-face workshops, online courses, and practical application projects. The curriculum is organized around four key thematic modules:

Applications for the 2024 cohort are due by March 15, 2024. The program will begin in June 2024.
