SSC MTS Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2024

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the MultiTasking Staff (MTS) examination to recruit candidates for various supportive roles in central government offices, public sector undertakings and ministries. The exam tests a candidates aptitude, language skills, analytical ability and basic knowledge of general awareness. Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: Indian.
  • Age: 1832 years (relaxable as per government norms).
  • Educational Qualification: Minimum 10th standard (SSC) or equivalent.
  • Physical Standards: Must meet the physical standards specified by the SSC for the post.

Exam Overview

The SSC MTS selection process consists of two stages:

  1. TierI: ComputerBased Examination (CBE) 100 questions, 60 minutes.
  2. TierII: Descriptive Paper (only for those who qualify TierI) 30 minutes, 100 marks.

  • Scoring: Based on content, language, grammar, relevance and presentation.

1. General Intelligence & Reasoning (30)

  • Analogy, Similarity, Classification.
  • Series (Number, Alphabet, Figure).
  • Logical Reasoning (StatementConclusion, Syllogism).
  • Blood Relations, Direction, DistanceTimeSpeed.
  • Nonverbal Reasoning Mirror images, Paper folding, Cubes.
  • Data Sufficiency and Decision Making.

2. General Awareness (20)

  • Current Affairs (National & International) last 12 months.
  • Static GK Indian Constitution, Geography, History, Economy, Sports.
  • Government Schemes, Important Days, Awards.
  • Basic Science Physics, Chemistry, Biology.
  • Banking, Financial Awareness, Defence.

3. Quantitative Aptitude (30)

  • Number Systems Divisibility, LCM/HCF, Simplification.
  • Arithmetic Percentages, Ratio & Proportion, Averages, Profit & Loss, Simple & Compound Interest, Time & Work, Time & Distance, Mixture & Alligation.
  • Algebra Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations (basic), Sequences.
  • Geometry Basic concepts of lines, angles, triangles, circles.
  • Data Interpretation Tables, Bar graphs, Pie charts, Line graphs.

4. English Comprehension (20)

  • Reading Comprehension One or two passages.
  • Grammar Error spotting, Fill in the blanks, Vocabulary (Synonyms/Antonyms).
  • Sentence Completion, Spotting Wrong Sentence, Idioms & Phrases.

Scoring & Qualification

There is no negative marking. A candidate must score the cutoff set by the SSC to qualify for TierII. The cutoff varies each year based on difficulty level and number of candidates.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Understand the pattern: Familiarise yourself with the number of questions and time allocation for each section.
  2. Daily practice: Solve at least 3040 MCQs daily covering all sections.
  3. Mock tests: Take a fulllength mock every week to build speed and accuracy.
  4. Focus on weak areas: Review performance reports and devote extra time to topics where mistakes are frequent.
  5. Current affairs: Read a reputable newspaper, follow weekly currentaffairs magazines and maintain short notes.
  6. English: Read short passages, improve vocabulary with flashcards, and practice grammar drills.
  7. Quantitative shortcuts: Learn quick methods for percentages, profit/loss, and data interpretation to save time.
  8. Physical fitness: Since the post requires meeting physical standards, keep a regular exercise routine.
