- Final Sample: From the well-mixed soil in the bucket, take a sub-sample (usually about 1 pint or 500 grams) to place into your sample bag.
4. Labeling and Documentation
Label each bag clearly with a unique identifier, the date of collection, and the specific field location. Maintain a detailed logbook or digital map that records where each sample was taken. This information is vital when interpreting the results provided by the laboratory.
5. Timing and Frequency
Consistency is key when it comes to timing. It is recommended to sample at the same time each year, preferably in the late fall or early spring, before any fertilizers or amendments are applied. Soil conditions should be moist but not saturated; sampling extremely dry or waterlogged soil can lead to skewed chemical analysis results.
6. Handling and Shipping
Once samples are collected, avoid exposing them to extreme heat or direct sunlight, which can alter biological activity in the soil. If you cannot mail the samples to the laboratory immediately, store them in a cool, dry place. Ship samples as soon as possible to ensure the lab receives fresh, representative soil.
