Software-Defined Networking (SDN)

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a transformative approach to networking that enables network administrators to manage, control, and program network behavior centrally through software applications. By decoupling the network control plane from the data plane, SDN simplifies network management and allows for more agile and scalable infrastructures.

The Core Concept

Traditionally, networking equipmentsuch as routers and switchesoperates as a closed system where the control logic (the "brain" that determines where data goes) and the data forwarding hardware (the "muscle" that actually moves the bits) are tightly integrated. SDN Architecture

A typical SDN architecture is often described as having three layers:

  1. The Application Layer: This contains network services such as load balancers, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems.
  2. The Control Layer: This is the SDN controller. It communicates with the application layer through Northbound APIs and with the forwarding hardware through Southbound APIs (such as OpenFlow).
  3. The Infrastructure Layer: This consists of the physical and virtual switches and routers that handle the actual traffic forwarding.

As organizations continue to transition to cloud computing and edge computing, the demand for dynamic and scalable networks grows. SDN is the foundation upon which modern technologies like Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and intent-based networking are built.
