Key Sections of the Statement
The simplified cash flow statement is divided into three broad categories that follow the Operating Investing Financing model. Each category captures cash received and cash paid during the year.
1. Operating Activities
These are cash flows generated by the daytoday business operations.
- Cash received from customers (sales, service fees, etc.)
- Cash paid to suppliers and employees
- Other operating cash items rent, utilities, insurance, taxes paid.
2. Investing Activities
Cash related to longterm assets.
- Purchase of equipment, vehicles or software licences.
- Proceeds from the sale of assets.
- Investments in other businesses or securities.
3. Financing Activities
Cash that reflects changes in the capital structure.
- Proceeds from bank loans, lines of credit or equity injections.
- Repayment of principal on loans.
- Dividends paid or owner draws.
How to Fill In the Template
- Gather bank statements, receipt registers and payroll reports for the entire year.
- Classify each cash transaction into one of the three sections above.
- Enter the amounts in the appropriate month column. The template automatically totals each section and calculates the net cash flow.
