The Vowels (Svara)

Vowels in Sanskrit are called Svaras. They are considered the independent sounds that can be pronounced without the aid of any obstruction in the mouth. The vowels are dynamic and dictate the pronunciation of the consonants attached to them. They are classified by their duration (short or long) and their articulation.

The Simple Vowels

  • a / : The central vowel. 'a' is the short sound (like the 'u' in 'but'), while '' is the long version (like the 'a' in 'father').
  • i / : The palatal vowel. The tongue moves to the hard palate. Short 'i' is like the 'i' in 'bit', while long '' is like the 'ee' in 'see'.
  • u / : The labial vowel. Pronounced with rounded lips. Short 'u' is like the 'u' in 'put', while long '' is like the 'oo' in 'moon'.
  • / : The vocalic 'r'. A unique sound where the tongue flaps against the roof of the mouth, acting as a vowel rather than a consonant.

The Diphthongs and Compound Vowels

Sanskrit also includes compound vowels formed by a glide from one simple vowel to another within a single syllable.

  • e: A sound similar to 'a' in 'cake' or 'e' in 'bet', but technically a combination of 'a' and 'i'.
  • ai: A longer diphthong, pronounced like 'i' in 'island' or 'ai' in 'aisle'.
  • o: Similar to 'o' in 'go', produced by combining 'a' and 'u'.
  • au: A longer diphthong, pronounced like 'ou' in 'sound' or 'au' in 'aura'.

Anusvra and Visarga

Two additional signs often function alongside vowels:

  • Anusvra (): A nasal sound represented by a dot above the letter. Its pronunciation changes depending on the consonant that follows it.
  • Visarga (): A breathed sound (aspirate) representing a voiceless echo of the preceding vowel. It is denoted by two vertical dots.

The Consonants (Vyajana)

Consonants, or Vyajanas, are sounds produced when the breath stream is obstructed by the speech organs. The arrangement of Sanskrit consonants is perhaps its most celebrated feature. They are organized in a logical grid based on five distinct places of articulation in the mouth, moving from the throat to the lips.

For each place of articulation, there are five sounds: an unvoiced unaspirated, an unvoiced aspirated, a voiced unaspirated, a voiced aspirated, and a nasal.

Gutturals (Kahya)

Produced from the throat.

  • ka (k in skip), kha (k in kite with puff), ga (g in go), gha (g in got with puff), a (ng in sing).

Palatals (Tlavya)

Produced with the tongue against the hard palate.

  • ca (ch in church), cha (ch with aspiration), ja (j in jam), jha (j with aspiration), a (ni in onion).

Cerebrals (Murdhanya)

Also known as retroflex sounds. The tongue curls back to touch the roof of the mouth. These are distinct to Indian languages.

  • a (hard t), ha (hard t with puff), a (hard d), ha (hard d with puff), a (cerebral n).

Dentals (Dantya)

Produced with the tongue against the upper teeth.

  • ta (soft t, like Spanish t), tha (soft t with puff), da (soft d), dha (soft d with puff), na (n in no).

Labials (Ohya)

Produced using the lips.

  • pa (p in spin), pha (p in pin), ba (b in bin), bha (b with aspiration), ma (m in man).

Semivowels and Sibilants

These are classified separately based on their phonetic properties. Semivowels act like glides, while sibilants are hissing sounds.

  • Semivowels: ya, ra, la, va.
  • Sibilants: a (palatal sh), a (cerebral sh), sa (dental s).
  • Glottal: ha (a guttural aspirate).

Structure of the Script

While the phonetics are the "soul" of the language, the script provides its visual form. In Devanagari, every consonant carries an inherent vowel sound, typically 'a'. To write a consonant by itself or with a different vowel, diacritical marks are used. This makes the script an "abugida" or alpha-syllabary.

Furthermore, consonants frequently combine to form clusters. When a consonant is followed immediately by another without an intervening vowel, they merge into a single compound character, known as a Ligature or Sandhi kshara. This combines the shapes of both letters into a new, unified glyph, allowing for the continuous flow of text.
