How to Write an Effective Query Letter

A query letter is a brief, professional pitch that introduces your book to literary agents or editors. It is your first impressionyour chance to convince a busy professional that your manuscript is worth their time.

Core Elements of a Query Letter

Salutation Address the agent by name; never use To Whom It May Concern.
Hook / Opening Paragraph One to three sentences that capture the storys central conflict and why its unique.
Brief Synopsis A 150250 word summary focusing on the protagonist, stakes, and the storys arc. Avoid subplots.
Author Bio Relevant credentials, publishing credits, or platform that make you a marketable author.
Closing Polite thankyou, mention attached manuscript details, and a courteous signoff.

StepbyStep Guide

1. Research Your Agents

Read each agents submission guidelines carefully. Note preferred genres, wordcount limits, and any requested materials (e.g., a sample chapter). Tailor each query to show you understand their list.

2. Craft an Irresistible Hook

The hook should answer three questions:

Who is the main character?
What do they want?
What stands in their way?

Example:

3. Write the Synopsis

Keep it concise and active. Focus on the protagonists journey, the central conflict, and the resolution without giving away every twist.

The map leads her to a submerged metropolis guarded by a genetically engineered society that has thrived for centuries unseen by the surface world. 4. Highlight Your Credentials

If you have no publishing record, focus on what makes you a credible voice: academic background, relevant experience, a strong platform, or a winning writing contest.

5. Polish the Closing

Thank the agent for their time, mention that the full manuscript (or requested portion) is attached, and sign off with a professional closing such as Sincerely. Include your contact information beneath your name.

Formatting Tips

Keep the letter to one page (roughly 300400 words).
Use a standard 12point, professional font (Times New Roman, Arial, or Georgia).
Singlespace the body, doublespace between paragraphs.
