About Queensbridge Connected

Queensbridge Connected is a community-driven initiative launched in 2015 to bridge gaps, create opportunities, and strengthen the social fabric within the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, New York. As the largest public housing development in North America, with over 3,000 apartments and approximately 7,000 residents, Queensbridge faced unique challenges that traditional approaches couldn't adequately address.

Our organization emerged from grassroots conversations among residents, community organizers, and local stakeholders who recognized that the existing support systems were fragmented, leaving many community members underserved. Queensbridge Connected was founded on the principle that sustainable change comes from within communities, driven by the people who call them home.

Since our inception, we've grown from a small collective of concerned neighbors into a robust organization with 15 full-time staff members, over 75 volunteers, and partnerships with more than 30 local organizations. Our holistic approach addresses the interconnected needs of Queensbridge residents through programs focused on education, economic opportunity, health and wellness, community building, and youth development.

"Queensbridge Connected isn't just about servicesit's about creating a community where every resident feels valued, heard, and connected to resources and opportunities that empower them to thrive."

We believe that housing is about more than physical shelterit's about creating an environment where people can raise families, pursue dreams, and build meaningful relationships. Queensbridge Connected works to transform Queensbridge from a place where people live into a thriving community where people flourish together.

Our Programs

Queensbridge Connected offers a diverse array of programs designed to meet the multifaceted needs of our community. Each program is developed in direct response to resident feedback and data-driven assessment of community needs.

Education & Skills Development

Our education initiatives provide learning opportunities for all ages, from early childhood programs to adult education and job training. We offer after-school tutoring, GED preparation, coding workshops, financial literacy classes, and professional development courses that help residents gain the skills needed for career advancement.

Youth Empowerment

Queensbridge Connected's youth programs create safe, nurturing spaces where young people can develop leadership skills, explore creative expression, and build meaningful relationships with mentors and peers. Our programs include summer camps, sports leagues, arts workshops, and a college readiness initiative that has helped over 200 students pursue higher education.

Health & Wellness

We coordinate regular health screenings, fitness classes, nutrition education, mental health support groups, and substance abuse counseling. Our community garden project not only provides fresh produce but also creates spaces for physical activity and social connection.

Economic Opportunity

Our economic development programs include entrepreneurship training, job placement assistance, financial coaching, and a micro-grant program that has helped 75 resident-owned small businesses launch or expand. We also connect residents with employment opportunities through partnerships with over 50 local employers.

Senior Services

Dedicated programs address the unique needs of our senior residents, including meal delivery, transportation assistance, social activities, technology training, and in-home support services. Our Senior Council also mobilizes older residents to contribute their wisdom and experience to community initiatives.

Community Building

Through regular events, workshops, and volunteer opportunities, we strengthen social connections and foster a sense of belonging. Our community space hosts gatherings ranging from cultural celebrations to neighborhood watch meetings, creating multiple entry points for civic engagement.

Our Impact

Queensbridge Connected's approach yields measurable outcomes that transform individual lives and strengthen the entire community. Our impact is reflected in both quantitative data and the qualitative stories of residents whose lives have been positively affected.

  • 90% improvement in school attendance among students participating in our after-school programs
  • 150 jobs secured for previously unemployed residents through our workforce development initiative
  • 75% reduction in food insecurity among households participating in our nutrition programs
  • $1.2 million in economic activity generated by businesses launched through our entrepreneurship program
  • 45% increase in digital literacy among older adults following our technology training workshops
  • 300 residents engaged in community decision-making processes quarterly
"Before Queensbridge Connected, I felt isolated and unsure of my future. Through their job training program, I found meaningful employment and rediscovered my passion for my community. Now I volunteer weekly, helping others find the same opportunities I did."

Maria R., Program Participant turned Volunteer

Beyond these measurable outcomes, we've seen a remarkable transformation in community cohesion. Resident surveys show a 40% increase in neighbors reporting they "know more people in their building" and a 55% increase in residents who feel they have "power to influence change in their community." Perhaps most heartening is that 85% of participants report feeling "more connected to their neighbors" after engaging with Queensbridge Connected programs.

Our success has garnered attention beyond Queensbridge, with our model being adapted in five other New York City housing developments and presented at national community development conferences as a promising practice in grassroots community transformation.
