Propagation of Plants by Grafting and Budding

Grafting and budding are specialized methods of asexual plant propagation where tissues from one plant are inserted into another so that the two sets of vascular tissues may join together. This technique is widely used in horticulture to combine the desirable characteristics of two different plantstypically a high-quality fruiting or flowering variety and a vigorous, disease-resistant root system.

Understanding the Components

To successfully perform grafting or budding, one must understand the two primary parts involved:

  • The Scion: This is a short piece of detached shoot containing several dormant buds. It will eventually become the upper portion (the branches, leaves, and fruit) of the new plant.
  • The Rootstock (or Stock): This is the lower portion of the plant, which includes the root system. It provides the anchor, water, and nutrient uptake for the grafted plant.

For a graft to be successful, the cambium layers (the thin layer of actively dividing cells between the bark and the wood) of both the scion and the rootstock must be aligned and held firmly in contact. This allows the plants to fuse together as they heal.

The Principles of Grafting

Grafting is commonly used for fruit trees like apples, pears, and stone fruits. There are several methods of grafting, including cleft grafting, whip-and-tongue grafting, and side grafting. The chosen method depends largely on the diameter of the rootstock and the time of year. Generally, grafting is performed in late winter or early spring while the plants are still dormant.

Success requires strict hygiene, sharp tools to ensure clean cuts, and the use of grafting tape or wax to prevent the union from drying out before the vascular tissues have connected.

The Principles of Budding

Budding is essentially a form of grafting where the scion is reduced to a single bud with a small sliver of bark or wood attached. It is often more efficient than grafting because it requires less scion wood, allowing a nursery to produce many more plants from a single parent tree.

The most popular method is T-budding, where a T-shaped slit is made in the bark of the rootstock. The bud is then inserted under the flaps of the bark and secured with a budding strip. Budding is typically performed in the summer when the bark is "slipping"meaning the bark peels easily away from the wood due to active growth.

Why Use Grafting and Budding?

These propagation methods offer significant advantages over planting from seeds:

  • Genetic Consistency: Plants grown from seed often do not resemble their parents due to cross-pollination. Grafting ensures that the fruit or flower quality remains identical to the scion parent.
  • Early Maturity: Grafted plants typically reach reproductive maturity (producing fruit) much faster than seedlings.
  • Adaptability: A rootstock can be chosen for its ability to grow in specific soil types, such as wet, heavy clay or alkaline soils, even if the desired fruit variety would not thrive in those conditions on its own roots.
  • Disease and Pest Resistance: Many rootstocks are bred specifically to resist soil-borne pathogens or pests like nematodes that would otherwise kill the scion variety.

Key Factors for Success

Even with careful technique, grafting and budding can fail. The most important factors to consider are physiological compatibility (the plants must be closely related botanically), proper alignment of the cambium, and the maintenance of a humid environment around the graft union until healing is complete. If the scion dries out before vascular union occurs, the graft will fail.

As the grafted plant grows, it is crucial to remove any "suckers"shoots that sprout from the rootstock below the graft unionto ensure that the rootstock's energy is directed entirely into the growth of the scion variety.
