2. Engine Models

The 400 Series is available in three cylinder counts, each offering multiple displacement options. The table below gives the most common models.

Model Cylinders Displacement (cc) Maximum Power (kW / hp) Maximum Torque (Nm / ftlb) Typical Applications
4.322 4 7,181 133kW / 179hp @ 2,300rpm 896Nm / 661ftlb @ 1,500rpm Excavators, skidsteer loaders
6.322 6 10,750 184kW / 247hp @ 2,300rpm 1,280Nm / 944ftlb @ 1,500rpm Backhoe loaders, loaders
8.372 8 14,822 254kW / 340hp @ 2,300rpm 1,788Nm / 1,319ftlb @ 1,500rpm Large excavators, cranes, marine drives

3. Performance Characteristics

3.1 Power Curve

All 400 Series engines deliver a flat torque curve with peak torque typically occurring between 1,300rpm and 1,800rpm. Maximum power is reached at 2,300rpm, providing a wide usable band for heavyduty equipment.

3.2 Fuel Consumption

  • 4cylinder: 215g/kWh (average)
  • 6cylinder: 210g/kWh (average)
  • 8cylinder: 205g/kWh (average)

Fuel consumption figures are based on ISO 81782 test cycles and are provided for reference only; realworld values may vary with load, altitude, and operating conditions.

3.3 Emissions

The series meets Tier4 Final / EuroVI standards using a combination of advanced EGR, selective catalytic reduction (SCR), and a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). Emissions are typically:

  • NOx: < 0.02g/kWh
  • PM: < 0.01g/kWh
  • CO: < 0.15g/kWh
  • HC: < 0.02g/kWh

4. Mechanical Specifications

4.1 Bore & Stroke

  • 4cylinder: 115mm 124mm
  • 6cylinder: 115mm 124mm
  • 8cylinder: 115mm 124mm

4.2 Compression Ratio

16.5:1 (standard), optional 17.5:1 for highaltitude applications.

4.3 Crankshaft & Connecting Rods

All models feature a forged steel crankshaft with counterbalanced main bearings and forged steel connecting rods with nitrided surfaces for wear resistance.

4.4 Cylinder Block & Head

Cast iron block with wet aluminum cylinder heads, equipped with watercooled exhaust ports and a closeddeck design for increased rigidity.

5. Ancillary Systems

5.1 Fuel System

  • Commonrail injection (up to 2,000bar)
  • Electronic control unit (ECU) with diagnostics
  • Optional highpressure pump for marine applications

5.2 Cooling System

  • Enginemounted water pump (mechanical)
  • Thermostatically controlled coolant flow
  • Optional aftercooler (up to 12C temperature drop)

5.3 Lubrication System

  • Fullpressure, drysump with oil cooler
  • Capacity: 12L (4cylinder), 16L (6cylinder), 20L (8cylinder)
  • Oil grade: SAE15W40 (ISO VG460) or 5W30 lowviscosity for cold climates

6. Mounting & Dimensions

Model Length (mm) Width (mm) Height (mm) Weight (kg) Mounting Type
4.322 1,120 825 1,235 620 Rearmounted, flexible coupling
6.322 1,285 900 1,285 850 Rearmounted, flexible coupling
8.372 1,500 1,010 1,340 1,150 Rearmounted, flexible coupling

7. Optional Accessories

  • Marine geardriven or beltdriven alternator (up to 30A@12V)
  • Integrated airstart system for coldweather operation
  • Turbocharger upgrades (singlestage, variable geometry)
  • Aftertreatment packages DPF, SCR, or combined systems
  • Heavyduty air cleaners (cyclonic or oilfree)
  • Remote monitoring module (OEMagnostic CAN bus interface)

8. Service & Maintenance

Typical service intervals are based on operating hours:

  • Oil change: every 500hours or 12months
  • Fuel filter: every 1,000hours
  • Air filter: every 2,000hours (or more frequently in dusty environments)
  • Coolant flush: every 2,000hours
  • Injector service: every 3,000hours (or as indicated by ECU diagnostics)

All maintenance procedures must follow the Perkins Service Manual (PMSeries400SM) and use Perkinsapproved parts to retain warranty coverage.

9. Compliance & Certification

The Perkins 400 Series holds the following certifications:

  • EPA Tier4 Final (USA)
  • EU StageIV / EuroVI (Europe)
  • ISO 85285 (Generator set compliance)
  • ABS / DNV GL (Marine applications)

10. Ordering Information

Engine orders are placed using the Perkins Part Number (PPN) system. A typical PPN format is:

PPNSeriesCylindersDisplacementPowerCode

Example: PPN400610750184 represents a 6cylinder, 10,750cc engine rated at 184kW.

11. Summary
