Online Psychotherapy Informed Consent Agreement

Welcome to our online psychotherapy services. This document is intended to provide you with important information about our policies, the nature of remote therapy, and the terms of our professional relationship. Please read this information carefully before our first session.

Nature of Online Therapy

Online psychotherapy involves the delivery of mental health services using interactive audio and video technology. While research suggests that online therapy can be as effective as in-person treatment, it is important to understand the inherent differences:

• Non-Verbal Cues: Online therapy may limit a therapists ability to observe non-verbal cues such as body language or subtle emotional shifts that might be more apparent in an in-person setting.
• Technical Disruptions: Connection issues, software malfunctions, or hardware failures may interrupt sessions. We will establish a backup plan (such as a phone call) if our primary video platform fails.
• Environment: You are responsible for ensuring that your environment is private, safe, and free from distractions during our sessions.

Confidentiality and Privacy

Your privacy is of the utmost importance. We utilize encrypted, HIPAA-compliant platforms to conduct our sessions. However, you should be aware of the following:

• Your Responsibility: You should ensure that you are in a private space where you cannot be overheard. Please do not record any sessions without explicit written consent.
• Limits of Confidentiality: As with in-person therapy, legal exceptions to confidentiality apply. These include, but are not limited to, situations involving the threat of harm to yourself or others, suspected abuse of minors or vulnerable adults, or if mandated by a court order.

Emergency Procedures

Online therapy is not suitable for individuals in an immediate crisis or those experiencing suicidal ideation. Because I may not be physically present with you, we must establish a safety protocol:

• You must provide an emergency contact person.
• You must be aware of the location of the nearest emergency room or crisis center.
• If you are in immediate danger, please hang up and call your local emergency services (e.g., 911) or go to the nearest hospital immediately.

Fees and Cancellations

Payment is due at the time of service unless other arrangements have been made. We require a 24-hour notice for any cancellations. If you miss a session or cancel with less than 24 hours' notice, you will be charged the full session fee.

Technology Requirements

To participate in online therapy, you agree to:

• Have a reliable, private internet connection.
• Use a device with a functional camera and microphone.
• Refrain from using public Wi-Fi networks to access our sessions, as they may compromise data security.

Client Consent

By engaging in our first session, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to the terms outlined in this agreement. You understand that you have the right to withdraw your consent for online therapy at any time. If you decide that online therapy is not meeting your needs, we can discuss alternatives, including referrals to in-person providers.
