OCR A Level Physical Education
The OCR A Level Physical Education course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how the body and mind function within the context of sport and physical activity. It balances scientific theory with socio-cultural factors, making it an ideal choice for students interested in sports science, coaching, or sports management.
Course Structure
The qualification is assessed through three written examination papers and a practical component known as the Non-Examined Assessment (NEA).
1. Physiological Factors Affecting Performance
This component covers the biological and physical aspects of sport. Students explore:
- Applied Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems.
- Exercise Physiology: How the body responds to different types of training and environmental conditions.
- Biomechanics: The study of motion, including Newtons Laws, projectile motion, and fluid mechanics.
2. Psychological Factors Affecting Performance
This section examines the cognitive processes involved in physical activity:
- Skill Acquisition: Stages of learning, guidance, and feedback.
- Sports Psychology: Personality, attitudes, arousal, anxiety, aggression, and group dynamics.
3. Socio-Cultural Issues in Physical Activity and Sport
This area looks at the broader impact of sport on society:
- Sport and Society: The history of sport, the development of modern Olympic games, and the impact of commercialization and media.
- Contemporary Issues: Ethics in sport, including drug use, violence, and the role of technology.
The Non-Examined Assessment (NEA)
The NEA comprises 30% of the total A Level grade. It consists of two parts:
- Practical Performance: Students are assessed as a performer or coach in one activity from the approved OCR list.
- EAPI (Evaluation and Analysis of Performance for Improvement): This is a verbal analysis where students observe a live or recorded performance, identify a weakness, and propose a detailed development plan to correct it.
Assessment Overview
Success in OCR A Level PE requires more than just subject knowledge; it demands the ability to apply that knowledge to real-world sporting scenarios. Examiners look for the use of specific terminology and the capacity to link theoretical concepts across different modules.
- Paper 1: 2 hours, 90 marks (Physiological Factors)
- Paper 2: 1 hour, 60 marks (Psychological Factors)
- Paper 3: 1 hour, 60 marks (Socio-Cultural Issues)
Top Tips for Success
To excel in this course, ensure you keep up with current sporting events, as these provide excellent examples for your socio-cultural essays.
