While the core features of ASD are behavioural, a growing body of research demonstrates that many individuals with autism also experience distinct nutritional patterns and related health concerns. Understanding these patterns is essential for clinicians, dietitians, educators, and families who aim to promote optimal growth, development, and quality of life.
Several studies report lower serum levels of vitamin D, B12, folate, iron, and zinc in children with ASD compared with neurotypical peers. These deficiencies may arise from limited dietary variety, selective eating habits, or gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction that impairs absorption.
Research consistently shows higher intake of saturated fat and simple carbohydrates, and lower intake of fibre and quality protein. Such patterns can contribute to overweight, insulin resistance, and altered gut microbiota.
Food selectivity, driven by sensory sensitivities (texture, colour, smell) or rigid routines, is reported in up to 70% of children with ASD. Common preferences include bland, processed foods and avoidance of fruits, vegetables, and proteins.
