National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African governmentfunded initiative designed to provide financial assistance to students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds who wish to pursue higher education at public universities and TVET colleges. • Be registered for fulltime study (parttime study is generally not funded).

Application Process

1. Register Online: Create an account on the NSFAS portal (nsfas.org.za) and fill in the personal and academic details.
2. Upload Supporting Documents: Proof of identity, proof of household income (e.g., payslips, tax returns), proof of residence, and acceptance letter from the institution.
3. Means Test: The system automatically calculates the means test score. Applicants with a score of 7 or lower are considered financially needy.
4. Submit Application: Review, confirm and submit before the stipulated deadline (usually in FebruaryMarch for the upcoming academic year).
5. Verification: NSFAS may request additional documentation or a home visit to verify the information provided.
6. Notification: Successful applicants receive an email and SMS notification, followed by an official letter with the funding amount and disbursement schedule.

• Application Closing: 31 March 2025
• Means Test Results Released: MidMay 2025
• Funding Disbursement Begins: June 2025 (first instalment)
• Final Instalment: April 2026, covering the 20252026 academic year.

Obligations of NSFAS Beneficiaries

Receiving NSFAS funding is a responsibility as well as a right. Beneficiaries must:

• Maintain Academic Progress: Meet the minimum passing mark (usually 40% per module) and maintain a satisfactory cumulative average.
• Report Changes: Notify NSFAS of any change in residence, household income, or study status within 30 days.
• Attend Orientation: Participate in NSFAS orientation sessions to understand the terms of funding.
• Repayment (if applicable): Students who earn a salary of R12000 or more per month after graduation are required to repay the loan over a period of up to ten years.

Academic Probation
