National Means Cum Merit Scholarship (NMMSS)
The National Means Cum Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) is a centrally sponsored scheme launched by the Government of India to provide financial assistance to meritorious students from economically weaker sections. The primary objective of this scholarship is to reduce the dropout rate at the secondary level and encourage students to continue their education beyond the eighth grade.
Overview: Under this scheme, scholarships are awarded to meritorious students whose parental income from all sources is not more than 3,50,000 per annum. Each year, 100,000 scholarships are awarded across the country.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the National Means Cum Merit Scholarship Examination, a candidate must meet the following requirements:
- The student must be currently studying in Class IX in a Government, Government-aided, or local body school.
- The student must have secured at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in the Class VIII examination (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST students).
- The student must be a regular student in the school.
- Students studying in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools, or private residential schools are not eligible for this scholarship.
- The parental annual income from all sources must not exceed 3.5 Lakh.
Examination Pattern
The selection of students for the award of the scholarship is made through an examination conducted by the State Government. The examination consists of two main parts:
1. Mental Ability Test (MAT)
The MAT section consists of 90 multiple-choice questions testing verbal and non-verbal reasoning, including analogy, classification, numerical series, pattern perception, and hidden figures. This section evaluates the student's cognitive and analytical skills.
2. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
The SAT section consists of 90 multiple-choice questions covering subjects taught in classes VII and VIII. This includes:
- Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
- Social Studies (History, Geography, Political Science)
- Mathematics
Scholarship Amount and Duration
Successful candidates who qualify for the scholarship receive an amount of 12,000 per annum (1,000 per month). The scholarship is paid directly into the bank accounts of the selected students through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) via the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode.
The scholarship is awarded from Class IX to Class XII, provided the student maintains good academic performance. To continue receiving the scholarship, students must:
- Secure at least 60% marks in Class X (55% for SC/ST) to continue the scholarship in Class XI.
- Maintain a minimum of 55% marks in Class XI for continuation in Class XII.
- Maintain regular attendance and conduct satisfactory behavior in school.
Application Process
Applications are generally invited through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). Students are advised to keep the following documents ready during the application process:
- Income certificate issued by a competent authority.
- Caste certificate (for SC/ST/OBC candidates).
- Disability status certificate (if applicable).
- Class VIII mark sheet.
- Bank account details (linked with Aadhaar).
Conclusion
The NMMSS serves as a vital bridge for thousands of students who might otherwise be forced to discontinue their education due to financial constraints. By providing early financial support, the Government of India aims to foster talent and ensure that meritorious students from rural and underprivileged backgrounds are given a fair opportunity to excel in their academic pursuits.
