How Gems are Formed

Gems are born in various environments. Some, like diamonds, are brought to the surface by deep-source volcanic eruptions. Others form in hydrothermal veins, where hot, mineral-rich water flows through cracks in rocks, depositing crystals as it cools. Still others form through metamorphic processes, where existing rocks are squeezed and heated until their chemical composition recrystallizes into new, often more beautiful, forms.

The study of gems, known as gemology, bridges the gap between science and art. By understanding the refractive index, specific gravity, and chemical makeup of a stone, we can determine its origin and quality.
