Microeconomics Class 11: Introduction - Revision Notes

Economics is a social science concerned with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. For Class 11 students, understanding the introductory concepts is the foundation for all future economic analysis.

1. The Definition of Economics

Economics is the study of how society manages its scarce resources. At the individual level, it involves making choices; at the societal level, it involves allocating resources to satisfy unlimited human wants with limited means.

2. Scarcity and Choice

Scarcity: The fundamental economic problem. Resources (land, labor, capital) are limited in comparison to the unlimited desires of human beings.

Choice: Because resources are scarce, we cannot satisfy every want. This necessitates making choices, which leads to the concept of opportunity cost.

3. Microeconomics vs. Macroeconomics

Economic theory is divided into two primary branches:

  • Microeconomics: The study of individual economic units, such as a single consumer, a single firm, or the price of a specific commodity.
  • Macroeconomics: The study of the economy as a whole, focusing on aggregate variables like National Income, General Price Level, and Total Employment.

4. Positive vs. Normative Economics

  • Positive Economics: Deals with objective analysis. It describes "what is." These statements can be tested and verified with facts and data (e.g., "The unemployment rate is 5%").
  • Normative Economics: Deals with subjective opinions. It describes "what ought to be." These statements reflect value judgments (e.g., "The government should increase the minimum wage").

5. Central Problems of an Economy

Every economy faces three fundamental questions due to the scarcity of resources:

  • What to produce and in what quantity? An economy must decide which goods to produce (consumer vs. capital goods) and how many of each.
  • How to produce? This refers to the technique of productionchoosing between Labor-Intensive (using more labor) or Capital-Intensive (using more machinery) techniques.
  • For whom to produce? This involves the distribution of the national product among different sections of society based on income and purchasing power.

6. The Production Possibility Frontier (PPF)

The PPF is a graphical representation showing the various combinations of two goods that an economy can produce given its current technology and full utilization of resources.

  • Shape: It is usually concave to the origin due to the increasing Marginal Opportunity Cost.
  • Shift: The PPF shifts outward due to economic growth, improvements in technology, or an increase in resources.

7. Opportunity Cost

Opportunity cost is defined as the value of the next best alternative foregone. If a farmer chooses to plant wheat, the opportunity cost is the rice he could have planted on that same land instead. It is the cost of the path not taken.

8. Economic Systems

  • Centrally Planned Economy: The government makes all decisions regarding production, consumption, and distribution to maximize social welfare.
  • Market Economy (Capitalist): Economic activities are governed by market forces (demand and supply). Decisions are made by private individuals and firms motivated by profit.
  • Mixed Economy: A combination of both government intervention and market mechanisms to balance profit motive with social welfare.

Understanding these basic concepts is essential for mastering the subsequent chapters in microeconomics, including consumer equilibrium, producer behavior, and market structures.
