Malayalam Program at HTCS Temple

Celebrating Language, Culture, and Community

Program Overview

The Malayalam Program at HTCS Temple was launched in 2015 to serve the growing Malayali community in the Greater Hartford area. It provides a welcoming environment for children, teens, and adults who wish to learn Malayalam, explore Keralas rich cultural heritage, and connect with fellow community members.

Language is the bridge that links generations. HTCS Temple Board

Classes are held every Saturday morning in the temples community hall. The program is open to beginners as well as those who already have a basic command of the language. All sessions are tuitionfree, with costs covered by donations and a small grant from the State Cultural Preservation Fund.

Curriculum Highlights

The curriculum is divided into three progressive levels:

  • Beginner (Level 1) Alphabets, basic vocabulary, simple greetings, and everyday phrases.
  • Intermediate (Level 2) Sentence formation, storytelling, basic grammar, and introduction to Malayalam literature.
  • Advanced (Level 3) Conversational fluency, poetry recitation, cultural debates, and preparation for language proficiency tests.

Each class follows a blended learning model:

  1. Interactive lecture (15min)
  2. Group conversation drills (20min)
  3. Multimedia session videos, songs, and proverbs (10min)
  4. Handson activity cooking, arts, or festival preparation (15min)

Assessment is informal and focused on participation. At the end of each term, students receive a certificate acknowledging their progress.

Community Activities

Learning extends beyond the classroom. The program sponsors several cultural events throughout the year:

Onam Festival August Traditional games, pookalam design, and a communal feast.
Malayalam Poetry Night October Recitation of classic and contemporary poems; studentled translations.
Kerala Cuisine Workshop January Handson cooking of dishes such as appam, puttu, and fish curry.
