Major (Macronutrient) Elements

Major elements, often called macronutrients, are required in relatively large amounts (grams per day) for the synthesis of structural components, enzymes, and physiologic processes. The most common major elements in the human body are:

Trace elements are needed in much smaller quantities (milligrams to micrograms per day) but are equally vital. They act primarily as catalytic centers in enzymes, stabilize macromolecular structures, and participate in signal transduction.

  • Magnesium stabilizes ribosome structure and nucleic acids.

Enzymatic and Catalytic Functions

  • Metalloenzymes often contain iron (e.g., cytochromes), copper (e.g., superoxide dismutase), or zinc (e.g., carbonic anhydrase).
  • Selenium is a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases, protecting cells from oxidative damage.

Electrolyte and AcidBase Balance

  • Sodium, potassium, and chloride maintain osmotic pressure and nerve impulse propagation.
  • Phosphate buffers help regulate blood pH.

Hormonal and Signaling Activities

  • Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, which controls metabolism.
  • Calcium ions act as second messengers in numerous signaling pathways.

Dietary Sources

Obtaining a balanced mix of major and trace elements requires a varied diet:

  • Dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified soy drinks supply calcium and magnesium.
  • Meat, poultry, fish, legumes, and nuts are rich in iron, zinc, and copper.
  • Whole grains and nuts provide manganese and selenium.
  • Seafood, especially kelp and shellfish are excellent iodine sources.
  • Fruits such as oranges and strawberries contribute potassium and small amounts of trace elements.

For individuals with restrictive diets (e.g., vegans, those with food allergies), supplementation may be necessary, particularly for vitamin B12 (cobalt), iron, iodine, and calcium.
