One of South India's leading institutions for higher education and research Madurai Kamaraj University was established in 1967 by an Act of the TamilNadu Legislative Assembly. Named after the eminent freedomfighter and former Chief Minister K.Kamaraj, the university was founded with a vision to promote inclusive education, foster research, and serve the social and economic development of the Madurai region and the broader state of TamilNadu. From its modest beginnings with a handful of departments, MKU now encompasses more than 250 postgraduate programs across 80+ departments, schools, and centres of excellence. The university is accredited with an A grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and enjoys a prominent place in national rankings. The main campus spreads over 300 acres in the historic city of Madurai, providing a blend of modern facilities and a tranquil environment. Key infrastructural highlights include: MKU follows a semester system and offers a wide variety of programs ranging from traditional arts and sciences to professional and technical courses. The university is organized into four major faculties: Interdisciplinary programmes such as Environmental Studies, Bioinformatics, and Data Science have been introduced to keep pace with global trends.
