Why Pronunciation Matters

Japanese is often described as a "syllabletimed" language. Each mora (a rhythmic unit similar to a syllable) tends to have the same length, which gives the language its characteristic musical flow. Accurate pronunciation helps learners be understood, avoid misunderstandings, and appreciate the natural rhythm of native speech.

The Five Japanese Vowels

Japanese has only five pure vowel sounds. They are short, clear, and never diphthongized like many English vowels.

u	u	as in flute (no rounding of lips)
e	e	as in bet
o	o	as in go (short oh)

Each vowel is pronounced with a single, steady tone. There is no glide from one vowel to another within a mora.

Japanese Consonants

Most Japanese consonants are similar to their English counterparts, but there are important differences.

k	k	Unaspirated, like sk in skill.
s	s	shi is /i/, a softer sh.
t	t	chi /ti/ and tsu /ts/ are unique.
n	n	Same as English n, but before m and p it becomes m.
h	h	fu is //a soft f made with the lips.
m	m	Same as English.
y	y	Like English y in yes.
r	r	Flap similar to Spanish r (between l and d).
w	w	Only appears before a () and o ().
g	g	Usually a hard g, but may be a softer ng sound in the middle of words.

The sound r is often the most difficult for English speakers. Practice by tapping the tip of the tongue lightly against the ridge behind the upper teeth.

Important Phonological Features

1. Mora Timing

Japanese distinguishes between short and long morae. A long vowel or a doubled consonant (represented by a small ) takes twice as long as a short one.

Short: (saka) slope
Long: (sakka) author

2. The Syllabic n ()

The nasal is a single mora that can be pronounced as /n/, /m/, // or a nasalized vowel, depending on the following sound.

before k or g: + /ka/ (e.g., Kankoku Korea)
before p or b: + /mpa/ (e.g., /mpa/)
at the end of a word: a nasalized vowel (e.g., hon book)

3. Pitch Accent

Japanese uses pitch rather than stress. Most native speakers recognize whether a word is highlow, lowhigh, or has a falling pitch. While beginners can communicate without mastering pitch, correct pitch makes speech sound natural.

Common Pitfalls for English Speakers

Dropping Unvoiced Vowels: English speakers often omit the vowel in su () after t or s. Say each mora clearly.
Adding Extra Consonants: The r sound is a single flap; avoid a full r or l.
Length Distinction: Confusing o and can change meaning (e.g., k vs. ko). Practice by counting beats.
Pronouncing fu as foo: Remember the lips are only slightly together; the sound is closer to a soft h with rounded lips.

Repeat each pair, focusing on mora length and pitch.

Read the following sentence aloud, marking each mora with a tap:

(tabemonowo tabemasu) I will eat food.

Recording Test

Record yourself saying the word (gakk, school). Listen and check that the k is held twice as long as a normal ka.
