Japanese Language Course Syllabus

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of our Japanese language course, students will be able to:

• Communicate effectively in Japanese in various everyday situations
• Read and write basic to complex Japanese texts using hiragana, katakana, and kanji
• Understand spoken Japanese in conversations, broadcasts, and media
• Appreciate Japanese culture, social norms, and etiquette through language study
• Prepare for standardized Japanese proficiency tests such as JLPT

Course Levels and Content

Beginner Level (JLPT N5-N4)

This introductory level is designed for students with little or no prior knowledge of Japanese.

Intermediate Level (JLPT N3)

This level builds upon the foundation established in the beginner level.

Advanced Level (JLPT N2-N1)

The advanced level focuses on fluency and sophisticated communication skills.

Teaching Methodology

Our Japanese language program employs a communicative approach that emphasizes active participation and authentic language use. Classes incorporate various techniques including:

• Interactive Dialogues: Practicing real-life conversations
• Role-play Activities: Simulating various social and professional situations
• Audio/Visual Materials: Using authentic Japanese media resources
• Writing Exercises: Progressive development from characters to essays
• Pair and Group Work: Collaborative learning activities

Assessment Methods

Student progress will be evaluated through the following methods:

• Weekly Quizzes: Short assessments on recently covered material (10% of grade)
• Oral Presentations: Individual and group presentations demonstrating speaking skills (20% of grade)
• Writing Assignments: Short papers, letters, and essays evaluating writing ability (20% of grade)
• Listening Comprehension Tests: Assessments of understanding spoken Japanese (15% of grade)
• Mid-term Exam: Comprehensive assessment of course material (15% of grade)
• Final Exam: Comprehensive assessment including all language skills (20% of grade)

Active participation and homework completion are expected and will be considered in borderline grading situations.

• Japanese-English dictionary (electronic or physical)
• Notebooks for character practice and class notes
• Pencils, erasers, and pens with red ink for correction
• Flashcards (recommended for vocabulary practice)
• Headset for language laboratory sessions

Prerequisites

• Beginner Level: No prior knowledge of Japanese required
• Intermediate Level: Completion of beginner course or equivalent proficiency (approximately 150 hours of formal study)
• Advanced Level: Completion of intermediate course or equivalent proficiency (approximately 300 hours of formal study)

Placement tests are available for students who wish to enter at intermediate or advanced levels without completing previous courses with our institution.

Course Policies

• Attendance: Regular attendance is essential for language learning. After more than three absences, students may require instructor permission to continue.
• Make-up Work: Missed exams and assignments must be completed within one week of returning to class, with prior instructor approval.
• Academic Honesty: All work must be original. Plagiarism or cheating will result in a zero for the assignment and possible dismissal from the course.
• Classroom Etiquette: Students are expected to participate actively in class activities and respect the learning environment.
