International Democrat Union Berlin Forum 2022

Overview

The International Democrat Union (IDU) Berlin Forum 2022 gathered senior politicians, policy experts and thinktank representatives from centreright parties worldwide to discuss the challenges confronting liberal democracies in a rapidly changing global environment. Held from 1416May 2022 at the Berlin Congress Center, the threeday event was organized under the theme Resilience, Responsibility, and Renewal. More than 600 delegates from 40 member parties attended, making it the largest European gathering of the IDU to date.

Day1 Setting the Stage

The forum opened with a plenary address by Sir Graham Brady, Chairman of the UK Conservative Partys Parliamentary Committee, who warned that democracy cannot be taken for granted. A keynote from Bundesministerin Dr. Annalena Baerbock (Green Party, Germany) introduced a crossparty perspective on climate policy, emphasizing the need for marketbased solutions compatible with centreright values.

Day2 Security & Strategic Autonomy

Security experts from NATO, the European Defence Agency and the German Ministry of Defence held a roundtable titled European Strategic Autonomy. The discussion focused on:

• Reducing reliance on nonEU energy supplies.
• Developing a coordinated cyberdefence framework.
• Strengthening defence industry collaboration across member states.

In the afternoon, President Andrzej Duda of Poland delivered a speech on the importance of firm borders combined with humane migration policies.

Day3 Economic Renewal & Social Cohesion

The final day centred on rebuilding economies hit by the COVID19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Highlights included:

• A panel on Green Growth for the CentreRight featuring CEOs from German renewable firms and policymakers from the Dutch VVD.
• A workshop on Digital Skills for the Future Workforce led by the UKs Department for Education and the Danish Liberal Party.
• The closing address by John Hume Jr. (Northern Ireland) urging parties to adopt compassionate conservatism as a cornerstone of postpandemic recovery.

3. Launch an IDU Youth Leadership Initiative to mentor politicians under 35.
4. Promote a common stance on migration that balances border security with humane treatment of refugees.
5. Coordinate a rapidresponse task force to counter disinformation campaigns targeting democratic institutions.
