The RACO Verbatim Gateway serves as a critical interface for remote monitoring and alarm notification. When tasked with integrating this system with the legacy Allen-Bradley SLC 500 series PLC, the primary challenge often lies in the communication protocol, specifically the DH485 (Data Highway 485) network. This guide outlines the technical considerations and steps required to establish robust communication between these two systems.

Understanding the Hardware Interface

The SLC 500 series traditionally utilizes the DH485 protocol for peer-to-peer communication and programming. To interface this with the RACO Verbatim Gateway, which typically expects a standard serial input (RS-232 or RS-485), one cannot simply wire the ports together. A protocol converter or a specialized communication module is required to translate the DH485 tokens into a format recognizable by the Verbatim Gateway.

Most integrators utilize a 1761-NET-AIC (Advanced Interface Converter) or a similar DH485-to-RS232 bridge. This hardware allows the Verbatim Gateway to query the SLC 500 processor using the DF1 protocol, which the SLC 500 supports over the same physical channel once configured correctly.

Configuration Steps

1. PLC Communication Settings

Before connecting the hardware, the SLC 500 channel configuration must be verified using RSLogix 500 software:

  • Navigate to the Channel Configuration tab.
  • Ensure that Channel 0 or the dedicated DH485 port is configured to support the required baud rate (usually 19.2k).
  • Confirm the Node Address of the PLC on the DH485 network. Each device on the link must have a unique node address.

2. Cabling and Physical Connection

The 1761-NET-AIC acts as the bridge. You will connect the SLC 500 to the AIC using a standard DH485 cable. The Verbatim Gateway connects to the RS-232 port of the AIC using a null-modem cable or the appropriate RACO-specified interface cable. Ensure that the RS-232 port on the AIC is set to "DF1 Master" or "DF1 Slave" mode, depending on the polling architecture of the Verbatim system.

3. Mapping Registers in the Verbatim Gateway

Once the physical path is established, the Verbatim Gateway must be programmed to map the specific PLC registers. The Verbatim acts as the Master in this scenario:

  • Define the PLC address within the Verbatim configuration software.
  • Identify the specific Data Files (e.g., N7:0, B3:0) that contain the alarm status or process variables you wish to monitor.
  • Set the polling frequency. Because DH485 is a legacy token-passing protocol, excessively fast polling intervals can saturate the network and cause timeout errors. A conservative poll rate of 1 to 5 seconds is recommended.

Addressing Common Challenges

Network Loading: DH485 is sensitive to excessive device counts. If the network contains multiple HMIs, programmers, and the Verbatim gateway, monitor the "Token Hold Time" and communication traffic to ensure the PLC scan time is not negatively impacted.

If the Verbatim Gateway fails to communicate, check the following:

  • Termination Resistors: Ensure the DH485 network is correctly terminated at both ends of the trunk with 120-ohm resistors.
  • Protocol Mismatch: Verify that the Verbatim is attempting to talk DF1 to the port, as the SLC 500 will not respond to native DH485 commands if it expects a serial/DF1 request via the AIC.
  • Node Conflicts: Confirm that no other device on the DH485 network shares the same node address as the Verbatim gateway.

Maintenance and Reliability

Because the DH485 protocol is inherently older, the physical integrity of the cabling is paramount. Shielded twisted-pair cable should be used to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI). Periodically test the alarm triggers to ensure that the register updates are reaching the Verbatim Gateway and that the notification chain (dial-outs) is functioning correctly. Consistent monitoring of the status lights on the AIC module can provide immediate diagnostic feedback regarding the health of the serial link between the Gateway and the PLC.
